(Continued from previous page) ...each has its own eccentric circle (不同心圏, literally "non-concentric circle"), each has its own equant (均圏), and each has its own epicycle (小輪). The eccentric circle and the epicycle differ in name but are the same in principle. All [the planets] adhere within eight degrees to either side of the ecliptic, and the motions of expansion-contraction (盈縮) and slow-fast (遅疾) are all calculated by dividing degrees and laying out computations by means of these [devices]. Each [planet] has two paths and two poles, and each has three hundred and sixty degrees. Regarding their degree-fractions, each further has true longitude/latitude (実経緯) and apparent longitude/latitude (視経緯). Regarding their conjunctions, there are true conjunction (実会), apparent conjunction (視会), true opposition (実望), and apparent opposition (視望). They are jumbled and unequal; only through the Sun's apparent motion (日躔) can they be brought into accord. For example, Saturn completes one circuit of heaven in just under thirty years; Jupiter completes one circuit in just under twelve years; Mars completes one circuit in just under two years; Venus and Mercury follow the Sun and complete one circuit per year. These are the proper motions (本行) of the weft-stars (planets). When a planet is at the farthest point of its epicycle (極遠之所, apogee of the epicycle), it necessarily conjoins with the Sun. Its motion is prograde (direct) and fast, and its body appears small. When it is at the nearest point of its epicycle (極近之所, perigee of the epicycle), its motion is retrograde and fast, and its body appears large. When Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars move in retrograde, they come into opposition (衝) with the Sun. When Venus and Mercury move in retrograde, they set in the evening (夕伏) and conjoin [with the Sun]; when they move in direct motion, they set in the morning (晨伏) and conjoin [with the Sun]. The boundary between the shift from direct to retrograde motion and the shift from retrograde to direct motion is called "stationary" (留). Being stationary does not mean the planet is not moving; it is rather that the planet is at the point of extremely slow motion. Before and after the stationary phase, whether direct or retrograde, there is always slow motion. The reason why Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars come into opposition with the Sun when in retrograde, whereas Venus and Mercury do not, is this: the proper heaven (本天, the deferent sphere) of Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars is large—each takes the Sun as its center and encompasses the Earth—and therefore they can come into opposition with the Sun. The proper heavens of Venus and Mercury also take the Sun as their center, but they do not encompass the Earth. They are like a wheel: when the hub turns on the inside and the axle is on the outside, [the wheel] revolves up and down. Therefore, as the Sun turns, Venus and Mercury sometimes revolve forward and sometimes revolve backward; one revolution forward, one backward—this too is where their momentum naturally leads them. When one observes them from the horizontal plane (平衡), one sees only their prograde and retrograde motions without knowing that they revolve (環転) around the Sun. Therefore, they cannot come into opposition with the Sun, yet they are capable of separating from it [by certain angular distances]. Venus separates from the Sun by forty-eight degrees; Mercury separates from the Sun by twenty-four degrees. These are the variant motions (異行) of the five planets. As for the Sun's motion, it arises because the ecliptic crosses obliquely... (continued on next page)
