Reckoning by the full calendar, from Chongzhen guiwei back to Emperor Yao's jiachen year: over three thousand nine hundred and twenty years, a total difference of fifty-eight degrees accumulated. This corresponds to a difference of one degree per sixty-eight years, seven months, thirteen days, and three hours. Over twenty-five thousand one hundred and some years, a total difference of three hundred and sixty-five degrees and a fraction would accumulate — constituting one full circuit of heaven — and [the vernal equinox] would return to its original position.
[Interlinear annotation: You Xiong (You Yan) says: "This calculation begins from the lunar mansion Xu (虚, Emptiness). Thus, after twenty-five thousand and some years, [the equinox] returns to Xu's original position. If instead one begins from Dou (斗, Dipper), then after twenty-five thousand and some years, [the equinox] likewise returns to Dou's original position."]
Further reckoning: from Chongzhen guiwei back to Emperor Ku's jiazi year — four thousand and twenty years — only a difference of fifty-seven degrees accumulated. Approximately, this yields a difference of just under one fen and nine seconds per year; a difference of one degree per seventy years and six months; and a difference of one full circuit of heaven per twenty-five thousand seven hundred and thirty-five years. This is the figure obtained by treating the whole period as a single unit and dividing.
[Interlinear annotation: You Xiong says: "The various eminent scholars of ancient and modern times were not precise in their degree measurements, which caused the variation in quantities and the fluctuation in degree differences. Nevertheless, this figure obtained by treating the whole as a unit also differs [from case to case]."]
The calculations proposed by the various scholars of successive dynasties each have their respective foundations. Regarding the methods of calculating the difference: scholars such as Guo Shoujing, Xu Heng, and Wang Xun measured the gnomon's shadow and verified the solar terms, determining the tropical year to be 365 days, 24 fen, and 25 seconds, and the full circuit of heaven to be 365 degrees, 25 fen, and 75 seconds. Comparing the larger and smaller of these two figures, there is a difference of 1 fen and 50 seconds; accumulating over sixty-six years and a fraction, this yields a retreat of one degree, which they established as the annual precession (歳差).
Zhenzhi (Li Zhizao) held that the fixed stars (經星) also shift at times, but their movement is so gradual that within a hundred years the difference is not great; over forty-nine thousand years, a difference of one full circuit would accumulate.
Liangshu Xiong Gong (Xiong Mingyu) held that over twenty-five thousand and some years a difference of one full circuit accumulates, and argued that the eastward-moving heaven takes the ecliptic as its axis; therefore, not only does it produce east-west differences, but further south-north differences also arise.
Mizhi Fang Gong (Fang Yizhi) held that the motion of the fixed stars produces a cumulative difference across the degrees of the quiescent heaven (靜天), and through the daily revolution of the tropical year (歳実), the Sun's position ends up shifting relative to the degrees of the fixed stars. In one year, the Sun moves from west to east through the twenty-eight lunar mansions — three hundred and sixty-five and one-quarter degrees — yet still falls short by more than one fen, such that after sixty-some years a difference of one degree accumulates. Calculating approximately, accumulating thirty thousand... [continued on next page]
