(Continued from previous page) ...in less than thirty thousand years, [the heavens] return to the original degree of the lunar mansion. However, the underlying principle of this precession cannot be fully grasped by adhering to any single method. Shizhai Huang Gong [Huang Daozhou] used the Book of Changes (Yi) to establish the calendar, and accumulated [calculations] using Guo Shoujing's myriad methods, but in the end could not avoid the problem of the "sprinkling method" (sǎpài) incorporating vacuous numbers. The Yi takes numbers as the starting point of subtle principles (duānjī), and the determination of the cyclically revolving static heaven is likewise the same. By uniformly listing fixed limits and distinguishing the seasonal nodes (jieqi), one records at which fen and seconds of which node the Sun arrives. Likewise one records where the five planets arrive each day, and likewise records the movements of the fixed stars. Then both the cause of the discrepancy and the convergence of the accumulated precession (zhuīchā) will naturally become clear of themselves. Some say: "Heaven cannot be seen; one can only take the sequential positions (chán-cì) of the fixed stars as a basis for study. Where then is the basis for studying the static heaven?" To this, Qianfu Fang Gong [Fang Yizhi] replies: "When mathematicians encounter a number that cannot be directly determined, they establish a method of proportional calculation (shāngfǎ). By this proportional method they measure from both sides, and fix [the answer] at the middle degree. Now, taking the fixed fen and seconds of the ring of the static heaven, and allowing the Sun, Moon, and five planets, together with the fixed stars, each to travel at their own respective speeds — how could [any of them] escape [being accounted for within this framework]?" Moreover, for one who comprehends the subtle principles of the Yi, there is nowhere [in creation] that is not the River Diagram and the Luo Writing (Hé-Luò). That is to say, before each thing existed as a thing, all was already the manifest [pattern of] Hé-Luò. I therefore put forward this idea, awaiting scholars of divine perspicacity to take it further. Mizhi Fang Gong [Fang Yizhi] says: "This establishes a constant method (héngfǎ). In measuring and testing [the heavens] in accordance with the times, the excess and deficiency (yíng-xū) are contained within it. Celestial motion has excess and deficiency: within one year there is excess and deficiency; within one day there is excess and deficiency; and over many years there may be excess, and over many years there may be deficiency." Tàixī Mù Gōng [a Western missionary, likely Niccolò Longobardo or similar] says: "The Earth also moves. Do you wish to fix [the measurements] based on observations from a single year? If one wishes to clarify the principle, the principle is as follows: previously, people had only taken the heaven of the fixed stars as the reference for the Sun's diurnal revolution, not knowing that the fixed stars themselves move through the static heaven, and that the static heaven cannot be seen. For this reason, there were none who realized this." Jié Zǐxuān [Jie Xuan] says: "The year is independently the year; the precession is independently the precession. The year originally has no precession. Heaven has the static and the dynamic. The static heaven has a fixed degree; the dynamic heaven has a fixed culmination (zhì). [Interlinear annotation: This speaks of the dynamic and the static as unified.] Revolving through the degrees of the static heaven and aligning with the culmination (solstice) of the dynamic heaven, this constitutes the year. When the seasonal nodes are in alignment and the southern culmination (winter solstice) reaches its extreme, the year... (continued on next page)"
