...the Purple Forbidden [Enclosure] (*Zǐwēi* 紫微) is present morning and evening [always]. The Seven Luminaries (*qī yào* 七曜) must follow the ecliptic (*huángdào* 黄道), pass through the Celestial Avenue (*tiān jiē* 天街), and once a year receive their affairs at the Supreme Subtlety (*Tàiwēi* 太微) before going forth. This is just like great ministers receiving the commands of the Son of Heaven at court and then proceeding to carry out their duties. The Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions spread out across the four directions, each guarding their respective degrees, leading the various fixed stars (*jīng xīng* 経星) to serve together under the Thearch of Purple Subtlety (*Zǐwēi* 紫微). This is just like the hundred officials of the provinces and kingdoms each governing their own duties, keeping their people at peace, and thereby serving the Son of Heaven.
In general, throughout the circuit of heaven (*zhōutiān* 周天), the Purple Forbidden Enclosure (*Zǐwēiyuán* 紫微垣) serves as the center. Although the celestial motion is without end, and the Three Lights (*sān guāng* 三光) [sun, moon, and stars] shine in alternation, only the [North] Pole does not move. Hence it is said: "The North Star (*běichén* 北辰) dwells in its place, and the multitude of stars pay court to it." This North Star is the most revered of all; originally there is no star [precisely] there. The Pole Star (*jí xīng* 極星) is rather the nearest star to that point; and in truth, even the Pole Star is not always motionless. It is merely that its motion is so minute that people do not perceive it.
One star within Gōuchén (Hook Formation 勾陳) is called the "Heavenly Sovereign Great Emperor" (*Tiānhuáng Dàdì* 天皇大帝). It is the supreme ruler (*zhǔzǎi* 主宰) of the Emperor. Since the Emperor dwells in the Purple Palace (*zǐgōng* 紫宮), the North Star resides in its place, while the entire heavens revolve, day and night without cease; this [star] alone serves as the pivot (*shū* 枢) of all this motion. If it were not for the Emperor's governance as supreme ruler, then the Four Assistants (*sì fǔ* 四輔), the Three Preceptors (*sān shī* 三師), the Secretariat (*shàngshū* 尚書), the Court of Justice (*dàlǐ* 大理), the Female Historians (*nǚshǐ* 女史), and the Pillar Historians (*zhùshǐ* 柱史) would all be mere empty names. And if the Pole Star were not serving as the pivoting axis (*shū niǔ* 枢紐), then the degrees of the lunar mansions — with Well (*Jǐng* 井) having as many as over thirty degrees and Turtle Beak (*Zī* 觜) having so few as to be less than one degree — how could those [varying degrees] ever be established? From this one can see that the Heavenly Thearch (*tiān dì* 天帝) has a constant position of honor, that the Heavenly Pivot (*tiān shū* 天枢) has a fixed location, and that the degrees of heaven (*tiān dù* 天度) have fixed numbers.
Furthermore, selecting and listing the most prominent [stars of the Purple Forbidden Enclosure]: The first star governs the moon and symbolizes the Empress Consort (*hòufēi* 后妃). The second star governs the sun and symbolizes the Crown Prince (*tàizǐ* 太子); it is also the seat of Grand Unity (*tàiyǐ* 太乙). The third star governs the five planets and symbolizes the lesser princes (*shùzǐ* 庶子). Gōuchén (Hook Formation 鉤陳) is the Inner Palace (*hòugōng* 后宮).
In the residence of the Heavenly Emperor (the Purple Palace), the four stars to the north are called the "Female Palace Attendants" (*nǚyùguān* 女御官), representing the image of the eighty-one imperial consorts. The four stars that embrace the north [pole] are called the "Four Assistants" (*sì fǔ* 四輔); they serve to assist the North Pole in issuing degrees and bestowing governance. The nine stars above the Great Emperor [star] are called "Canopy" (*huágài* 華蓋); they serve to cover and shelter the seat of the Great Emperor. The nine stars below [the Canopy] are called "Gǎng" (扛, the handle); they are the handle of the Canopy. The five stars further below are called "Five Emperor Inner Seats" (*Wǔdì nèizuò* 五帝内座). The six stars beside the Gǎng are called "Six Jiǎ" (*liù jiǎ* 六甲); they serve to divide yin and yang and correspond to the seasonal nodes (*jiéhòu* 節候). Therefore, standing beside the Emperor, they spread out governmental instruction and bestow [guidance for] agricultural [affairs]...
