The one star to the north is called "Female Historian" (*Nǚshǐ* 女史). The nine stars of the Relay Lodges (*Chuánshě* 伝舎) are situated above the Canopy (*Huágài* 華蓋), and being near the River [Milky Way], they form a lodging house for guests and travelers. The five stars in the center of the Southern River (*Nánhé* 南河) are called "Zàofǔ" (造父, the Charioteer). They represent the office of charioteer. The nine stars in the center of the Western River (*Xīhé* 西河) are called "Hook Stars" (*Gōu xīng* 鉤星). The Heavenly Unity Star (*Tiānyǐ xīng* 天乙星) is located to the south of the right star of the gate of the Purple Palace (*Zǐgōng* 紫宮); it is the divine spirit of the Heavenly Emperor. The Grand Unity Star (*Tàiyǐ xīng* 太乙星) is located to the south of the Heavenly Unity Star; it too is the divine spirit of the Emperor. The fifteen stars of the Purple Palace Enclosure (*Zǐgōng yuán* 紫宮垣) — seven forming the western wall (*xīfān* 西蕃) and eight forming the eastern wall (*dōngfān* 東蕃) — are situated to the north of the Northern Dipper (*Běidǒu* 北斗). One account says that the seat of the Grand Emperor of Purple Subtlety (*Zǐwēi Dàdì* 紫微大帝) is the perpetual abode of the Son of Heaven. The five stars below the eastern wall are called "Celestial Pillar" (*Tiānzhù* 天柱); they establish governmental instruction and display the charts and regulations. The five stars at the southeastern corner inside the gate are called "Secretariat" (*Shàngshū* 尚書); they govern the receiving of memorials. The two stars to the west of the Secretariat are called "Yin Virtue and Yang Virtue" (*Yīndé Yángdé* 陰徳陽徳); they govern the relief of the urgent and distressed and the comforting of the people. The two stars inside the left side of the gate are called "Great Judge" (*Dàlǐ* 大理); they govern the administration of punishments. The six stars outside the gate are called "Celestial Couch" (*Tiānchuáng* 天床). The two stars outside the corner to the southwest are called "Inner Kitchen" (*Nèichú* 内厨). The six stars outside the corners to the east and west are called "Celestial Kitchen" (*Tiānchú* 天厨). This concludes [the description of] the North Pole and Purple Palace [asterisms]. The seven stars of the Northern Dipper (*Běidǒu* 北斗) are located to the north of the Supreme Subtlety (*Tàiwēi* 太微). They are the pivot and mechanism (*shūjī* 枢機) of the Seven Regulators (*qī zhèng* 七政, i.e., the sun, moon, and five planets), and the fundamental origin (*yuánběn* 元本) of yin and yang. They revolve through the center of the heavens, look down and govern the four directions, establish the four seasons, and regulate the five phases (*wǔ xíng* 五行). Hence it is said: "When the Dipper tilts once to the north, the ten thousand things wane; when the Dipper tilts once to the south, the ten thousand things wax full." The four stars of the Bowl (*kuí* 魁) constitute the "Jade Armillary" (*xuánjī* 璇璣), and the three stars of the Handle (*sháo* 杓) constitute the "Jade Beam" (*yùhéng* 玉衡). It is also said: "The Dipper is the image of the ruler of men and is the master of commands and orders." It is also referred to as the "Emperor's Carriage" (*dì chē* 帝車), taking the meaning of revolving motion. Its first star is called "Celestial Pivot" (*Tiānshū* 天枢), corresponding to Heaven. The second is called "Celestial Jade" (*Tiānxuán* 天璇), corresponding to Earth. The third is called "Celestial Mechanism" (*Tiānjī* 天璣), corresponding to the Sun. The fourth is called "Celestial Balance" (*Tiānquán* 天権), corresponding to Time. The fifth is called "Jade Beam" (*Yùhéng* 玉衡), corresponding to Sound. The sixth is called "Opening Yang" (*Kāiyáng* 開陽), corresponding to the Musical Pitch-Pipes (*lǜ* 律). The seventh is called "Flickering Light" (*Yáoguāng* 瑶光), corresponding to the Stars. Stars one through four form the Bowl (*kuí* 魁); stars five through seven form the Handle (*sháo* 杓). The three stars to the south of the Handle, together with three stars to the west and the first star of the Bowl, are all called the "Three Dukes" (*sān gōng* 三公). They govern the proclamation of moral transformation (*déhuà* 徳化), the regulation of the Seven Regulators, and the harmonization of yin and yang. This concludes [the description of] the Northern Dipper. The six stars of Literary Brilliance (*Wénchāng* 文昌) are located in front of the Bowl of the Northern Dipper. They are the six governmental offices (*liùfǔ* 六府) of Heaven. The first is called "Supreme General" (*shàngjiāng* 上将); the second is called "Second General" (*cìjiāng* 次将); the third is called "Noble Minister" (*guìxiāng* 貴相); the fourth is called "Overseer of Emolument and the Center" (*sīlù sīzhōng* 司禄司中); the fifth is...
