(Continuing from the previous page: from the mansion "Room" [室] to "Harvesting Basket" [婁]) — The palaces, halls, gardens, and parks of the Son of Heaven are located here. The mansion Stomach [胃, Wei] governs the various storehouses and the treasury of the five grains. The mansion Pleiades [昴, Mao] is named "Maotou" (the tasseled spear) and governs punishments and prisons. Thus the asterism "Rolled Tongue" [巻舌] is attached to it. The mansion Net [畢, Bi] governs foreign armies; between Mao and Bi, the "Heavenly Street" [天街] is divided. For the mansion Orion [参, Shen], the three central stars form the central army, the middle star is the great general, and the flanking stars are the staff officers. The two shoulder stars are the left and right generals; the two foot stars are the vanguard and rear generals. The three small stars in the center are called "Fa" [伐], the heavenly provost marshal [都尉]. The mansion Turtle Beak [觜, Zi] is the storehouse of the marching army, and the asterism "Seated Banner" [座旗] is attached to it. The mansion Well [井, Jing] governs the matters of water management, laws and regulations, and equitable administration. Among things that are level and balanced, nothing compares to water. Therefore, the founding of states, the building of city walls, the demarcation of fields, and the division of provinces all take their image from here. Accordingly, the Four Waterways [四瀆], the Five Feudal Lords [五諸侯], and the Northern and Southern Rivers [南北河] are attached to it. Every state must have a communal altar [社]; therefore the Heavenly Altar [天社] is attached to it. Every altar must have its sacrifice; therefore the Heavenly Kitchen [天厨] is attached to it. The mansion Ghost [鬼, Gui] governs temple offerings and rites. The mansion Willow [柳, Liu] governs plants and trees and feasting and banquets. The mansion Star [星, Xing] represents the gathering of culture and civilization, and the embroidered patterns of ritual garments [黼黻]. The mansion Extended Net [張, Zhang] governs the precious treasures and articles of use in the ancestral temple. Therefore the Heavenly Temple [天廟] and the Revered One [太尊] are attached to it. In the year "Tianqi Jiazi" [天啓甲子], the five planets gathered in the mansion Zhang. The mansion Wings [翼, Yi] is the music bureau [楽府] of the Son of Heaven. The mansion Chariot [軫, Zhen] governs chariots, cavalry, and the loading of cargoes, and then returns to the mansion Horn [角, Jiao]. For phenomena such as shooting stars, falling stars, warring stars, flying stars, encroachment, stationary positions, flaring of points and horns, and occultations, each is divined according to its category. Stars such as guest stars, streaming stars, ominous stars, auspicious stars, comets, and fuzzy-tailed comets are all manifestations of the qi of earthly disasters or auspicious omens, which rise up and appear in the sky. Therefore, they have no fixed place where they appear, no fixed time when they are seen, and likewise no fixed form.
**On the Abundance or Scarcity of Fixed Stars**
Question: The fixed stars already have names assigned to them in order. Yet among them there are many of unequal size and unequal number. Can it be that none have been overlooked?
Answer: Fixed stars are also called "arrayed lodges" [列宿] and also called "warp stars" [経星]. To say "fixed" [恒] means that they are eternally unchanged since antiquity. To say "warp" [経] is to distinguish them from the north-south motion of the five weft [planets, 五緯]. Their number is exceedingly great, and none can exhaust it entirely. Now, having already been measured and their sizes examined, they are divided into six grades. The first grade consists of the great stars, such as the Five Emperors' Seats [五帝座]...
