[Continued from previous page]...one would be left utterly at a loss. From the Prime Mover downward, all the heavens shift and revolve with the times; their eight motions are not alike (interlinear note: referring to the fixed stars and the Seven Regulators), and their two poles each differ. If one were to argue about motion using motion as a reference, everything would be jumbled and disordered, and on what could one rely to serve as a resource for calculation and reckoning? Therefore, where there is a heaven that does not move, there must be above it an unmoving path (orbit), unmoving degrees (gradations), and unmoving poles. Only then can the movements of the various heavens be calculated on this basis. In all such expressions as "a certain luminary travels so many degrees across the heavens in such-and-such a time" or "it completes one circuit of the heavens in such-and-such a time," the "heaven" spoken of always refers to this heaven — the Heaven of Perpetual Rest. The unmoving poles, in alignment with the center of the Earth, thread the greatest heaven and the smallest earth upon a single axis. Only then do the various heavens cross and move without error. Hence, the motion of the heavens takes stillness as its foundation. That the heavens complete one revolution per day — this is their normal state. The inner body of the heavens, as it extends farther inward, grows progressively slower, until it reaches the point of non-movement: this is the terrestrial globe. The outer body of the heavens likewise grows progressively slower as it extends farther outward, until it reaches the point of non-movement: this is the Heaven of Perpetual Rest. **The Movements of the Various Heavens (諸天運行)** [Question] Given that this unmoving heaven and the unmoving earth are threaded onto a single axis, the various heavens will not fall into disordered movement. And yet the movements of the various heavens are not movements that arise spontaneously and of themselves — they are movements that arise from some purposive agency. If we say that this movement is natural, then surely non-movement would be even more natural. But if we say that this movement involves purposive agency, then what is the purpose of such agency? [Answer] The movements of the various heavens take the poles as their pivotal axis, and have no physical substance. They are simply like a strong wind swirling round and round, rising and falling without cease. This constitutes the substance of heaven — and yet it is not merely the substance of heaven. It is, in truth, both natural and purposively wrought. Therefore, the motion of the various heavens completes one revolution through the twelve hours (of day and night), and day and night alternate with one another in succession, having never once stopped. This is because there exists a divine, unmoving transformative power (shénhuà / 神化) that serves as their lord and master. It is precisely because there is something that does not move that the heavens are able to move constantly — this is the reason they move without exhaustion — and thus the ten thousand things all find their proper place. All of this arises from this inexhaustible movement... [continues on next page]
