[Continued from previous page]...that all things are brought to completion and fruition. Were this not the case, day and night would lose their balance, and motion and stillness would become skewed, with one prevailing over the other. The Way of Heaven would be thrown into disorder, and human affairs would fall into ruin. Therefore, the fact that the regions inside and outside the celestial equator are separated by equal distances on both sides, with all boundaries equal, is — one may surmise — the means by which the sun is made to complete one revolution per year, dividing the four seasons and giving birth to the ten thousand things of the earth. It is not without reason. Consider this: in winter, the cold is severe, and the primordial vital force (yuán qì) is closed up and stored below. In spring, all becomes mild, and the ten thousand things draw upon that force, putting forth growth and rising upward. The heat of summer causes transformation, and before that transformation is complete, it extends and unfolds the manifold conditions of life. The solemn severity of autumn removes harmful shoots and enfolds the good seeds for storage. This is why the motion of the Celestial Sphere (hùn tiān) serves to nurture the ten thousand things. --- **The Distances of the Seven Luminaries from Earth (七曜離地)** [Question] Within the Celestial Sphere (hùn tiān), the Seven Luminaries (sun, moon, and five planets) and the arrayed lunar mansions each have their proper positions in which they are lodged. How great, then, are their respective distances from the earth? And how great are their respective altitudes and the sizes of their orbital circles? [Answer] The Way of Heaven is subtle and wondrous. In antiquity, scholars clarified its principles but made only rough measurements. Today, scholars penetrate its principles thoroughly and refine their measurements to precision. From the earth up to the Heaven of the Prime Mover, each sphere has its measurement and calculation. Matteo Ricci (利西泰 / Lì Xītài) states: Measuring the circumference of the earth as 90,000 li, the moon is separated from the center of the earth by more than 482,520 li. Mercury (辰星, the Star of the Celestial Stems) is separated from the center of the earth by more than 918,750 li. Venus (太白, the Great White) is separated from the center of the earth by more than 2,400,681 li. The sun is separated from the center of the earth by more than 16,055,690 li. Mars (熒惑, the Dazzling Deluder) is separated from the center of the earth by more than 27,412,100 li. Jupiter (歳星, the Year Star) is separated from the center of the earth by more than 126,769,584 li. Saturn (填星, the Filling Star) is separated from the center of the earth by more than 205,770,564 li. The sphere of the fixed stars (経星) is separated from the center of the earth by more than 322,769,845 li. Beyond this lies the Heaven of the Prime Mover, which completes one revolution per day and which encompasses and envelops all the revolving heavens. Its distance from the center of the earth is...
