(Continued from previous page) ...The Sun travels along the central line of the ecliptic. Its celestial centre (the centre of its orbit) does not share the same centre as the other heavens. Therefore, when its revolution is observed from the Earth's surface, it does not travel in a path parallel to the Earth's surface. The eight degrees on either side of the ecliptic constitute the path along which the Moon and the five planets move in and out. The longitude and latitude of both the Sun and Moon revolve in accordance with the ecliptic pole. For this reason, their axes do not always coincide with the north-south meridian axis (子午). Those among our Confucian scholars who examine the Nine Spheres say that, because the degrees of motion of the fixed stars and the Seven Luminaries each differ, (the spheres) are stacked one upon another, and multiple layers are provisionally established as a basis for calculation.

**The Body of the Earth (Chitai)**
Question: The Buddhist scriptures divide the world into four directions, forming four continents (Shisu / Caturdvīpa). Zou Yan said that the ocean surrounds the outside of the Nine Provinces. Wen Chang said that water reaches all the way up to the heavens. All of these views treat the Earth as flat ground. Now (this text) states that the celestial body is perfectly spherical (kon'en). The ancients also said: "Heaven is like the white of an egg; the Earth is like the yolk." This means that heaven encloses the outside, and the Earth extends through the middle. Yet heaven is the light and pure qi, while the Earth is the heavy and turbid dregs. If (the Earth) has already become a spherical body residing in the middle, how can it float in the void without falling? If there are people on all four sides (of the sphere), how can they be settled in their dwellings? And how can they distinguish the four directions?
Answer: Heaven and Earth are together perfectly spherical and are fundamentally linked together. The ancients said: "Remove one foot of Earth and you add one foot of Heaven." In that case, the Earth too is Heaven. It is called "Earth" when speaking in terms of its form. The void of Heaven (ten'kyo) revolves around the outside day and night, while the solid Earth (chijitsu) remains firmly unmoved at the centre. On the four sides of the Earth, the sunken parts become rivers and seas, the protruding parts become mountains, and the flat parts become fields and plains. Everywhere that people dwell and stand depends upon the spherical body. Heaven wraps around and adheres to it. The revolving qi rises and descends without cease; all four sides are tightly sealed, allowing no tilting or shifting. The Earth cannot but congeal at the centre and thereby sustain itself. And so in general there are no directional corners — all four sides are equally "up," and there is no place to fall. Positioned at the very centre of Heaven, there is likewise no place on which (the Earth) could lean. When it is said that Heaven rises in the east and descends in the west, this too is spoken from the perspective of where a person dwells. For Heaven, there is no place that is not "rising" and no place that is not "descending" — it revolves in its entirety...
[Marginal note at top: The character "他" (he/it) should be written as "地" (earth/ground).]
