現代語訳
猫が化けるのは藻を被るよりもはなはだ手間がかかる。手拭いや鼻皿などは少なく、たまたま紅屋（べにや）の店に吊るしてあるけれども、なかなか猫くらいの手には及ばない。まだ頼みに思うのは駄菓子屋の布巾なれども、品切れなので化けることが手間取る。結局人間のために馬鹿にされることが多く、そそっかしい下女が茶碗や蓋物を壊しては小間物屋で積みを取ろうとして棚から落としたなどと、身に覚えのない罪を着せられるが言い訳もならない。たまたま昼寝をすれば、いたずらっ子の悪太郎に唸らされるので、ちょっかいをかんで胸に手を乗せて跳ねる。猫が唸らされるときは犬とも言われぬので、鼠の鳴き声をするのはよい案である。
♪猫の夢にもいろいろの占い方があって御魚御飯の夢を嫌うなり。代わりには腹が減るという意味事なるべし。初夢などには一節（いちぶし）というて、鰹節を第一とし、一節、二ひなた、三鼠、これらは夢の上々吉なり。

When they happen to take an afternoon nap, mischievous little devils torment them with growling sounds, so they bite back and leap up, placing their paws on their chest. When cats are tormented like this, they can't even be called dogs, so making mouse squeaking sounds is a good strategy.
♪Even cat dreams have various methods of divination, and they dislike dreams of fish and rice. Instead, this likely means an empty belly. For New Year's first dreams, there's something called "ichi-bushi" (one flake), with dried bonito flakes being first: first bonito, second sunny spot, third mouse - these are the most auspicious dreams.
