現代語訳
腰から下のないものは幽霊のほかに人形遣いの上下（じょうげ）、向島の鳥居、面影の行灯などである。化け物の方では、腰から下のないものは案山子ほど恐ろしいものはないと思っている。怖いと思う気に笠を着せて、心の弓は目もくれ、竹の蓑毛（みのげ）も逆立つ恐ろしさ。何となるこの狐に迷い引かれるまでの煩悩、窪よりぞくっとするのは、こうした間違いよりあったら、肝を潰すことがある。
されば古歌にも
「山田守る案山子に技はなけれども、ありと思えばしかも通わす」

英語訳
Things without lower bodies include ghosts, as well as puppet handlers' upper and lower puppets, the torii of Mukōjima, and lanterns with face shadows. From the monsters' perspective, among things without lower bodies, nothing is more terrifying than a scarecrow. When fear takes hold and puts on a hat, the heart's bow loses focus, and even the straw raincoat bristles with terror. What becomes of this confusion led astray by foxes - the earthly desires, the chill from the hollow - if such mistakes occur, they can crush one's spirit.
Therefore, an old poem says:
"The scarecrow guarding the mountain rice field has no skill, but thinking it real, one still keeps away"
