現代語訳
薄月夜の夕暮れ、産女鳥はぶらぶらとそこここを徘徊し、きれいな通行人に会ったら石の子を抱かせようと企んで口を開けるという身振りで、石を抱えて立っていれば、材木の陰でごそごそと羽ばたきの音がするので、いかなる鳥の寝ぐらであろうかと月影にすかして見れば、玉手箱を開けた浦島を見るような、若いようで年を取った、美しいような不気量な、やつれ顔が材木のそばを這い寄るのを見て、身の毛もそっと恐ろしく、ほうほうの体で逃げ出そうとすれば、材木の片陰に色青ざめた男、口は耳のあたりまで裂けて、二つ目とは見られず、産女鳥は「ぎゅう」の声も出ずに、産女を見ぬうちに逃げ去る。

英語訳
In the dim moonlit evening twilight, the ubume bird wanders here and there aimlessly, and when it meets a beautiful passerby, it plans to make them hold a stone child, opening its mouth in such a gesture. While standing holding a stone, there came a rustling sound of flapping wings from the shadow of lumber, so wondering what kind of bird's roost it might be, when looking through the moonlight, they saw what appeared to be like Urashima opening the jeweled box - something that looked young yet aged, beautiful yet unpleasant, an emaciated face crawling near the lumber. Seeing this, with hair standing on end in quiet terror, trying to flee desperately, there in the partial shadow of the lumber was a pale-faced man whose mouth was split to his ears, who could not be seen as having two eyes. The ubume bird could not even let out a "gyuu" cry and fled without even seeing the ubume.
