○弓（ゆみ）は射芸（しやげい）といふ武（ぶ）
士（し）の家（いゑ）に生（うま）るゝ人は射（しや）
芸（げい）を学（まな）はずんばあるべか
らず武士（ぶし）を弓執（ゆみとり）とは
いふなり唐土（もろこし）に楊由（やうゆう）
基（き）と云し弓（ゆみ）の達人（たつじん）は百
歩（ほ）下（さが）りて柳（やなぎ）の葉（は）を

○馬（むま）は乗馬（じやうば）の法（ほう）なり
是（これ） 武士（ぶし）の要道（ようどう）なれば
師伝（しでん）を受（うけ）て習（なら）ふべきこ

者（しや）によりて駿馬（じゆんめ）にても

【右丁 上段】
○弓は射芸といい、武士の家に生まれる人は射芸を学ばなければならない。武士を弓執（弓取り）というのである。中国に楊由基という弓の達人がいて、百歩離れて柳の葉を射るのに、一枚の葉も射損じることがなかったという。我が国においては、鎮西為朝、能登守教経、那須与一等が弓の達人である。その他にも数多くの精兵の射手がいた。
【左丁 上段】
○馬は乗馬の技法である。これは武士の重要な道であるから、師匠の伝授を受けて習うべきことが肝要である。上手な者、下手な者によって、駿馬であっても悪い癖が出るものである。その種類は百種類の癖があるという。馬の調教や癖を直す方法には決まった作法があって、昔から八乗流がある。現在は大坪の一流を専ら用いて武士の重要な道とする。高い山の険しい場所も容易に登り、大河を渡すのも、これはすべて駿馬の優れた能力である。

○The bow is called "shagei" (archery), and those born into samurai families must learn the art of archery. Samurai are called "yumitori" (bow bearers). In China, there was an archery master named Yang Youji who could shoot willow leaves from a hundred paces away without missing a single leaf. In our country, Chinzei Tametomo, Noto-no-kami Noritsune, Nasu no Yoichi and others were archery masters. Besides these, there were many other skilled military archers.

○The horse refers to the techniques of horsemanship. Since this is an essential way for warriors, it is crucial to receive instruction from a master and practice. Depending on whether one is skilled or unskilled, even a fine horse can develop bad habits. It is said there are a hundred types of such habits. There are established methods for training horses and correcting their bad habits, and since ancient times there have been eight schools of horsemanship. Today, the Otsubo school is primarily employed as the essential way for warriors. Easily climbing treacherous mountain terrain and crossing great rivers - these are all due to the excellent abilities of fine horses.
