に臣（しん）は終南（しうなん）の進士（しんじ）鍾馗（しようき）

○持国天王／乾達婆と毘舎闍を足下に踏み従えて、東方を守護したまう四天王の第一なり。
○増長天王／鳩槃荼と薜茘多を足下に踏み従え、南方を守護したまう四天王の第二なり。
○広目天王／龍及び富単那を足下に踏み従え、法界を安立し西方を守護したまう。
○毘沙門天王／夜叉羅刹を足下に踏み従え、北方を守護したまう。大悲多聞天王ともいう。

○韋駄天は仏法の守護神なり。魔王が仏舎利を奪い取り逃げるのを追いかけて取り返したまうなり。禅家は厨房に安置す。
○鍾馗は唐の明皇が夢に「臣は終南の進士鍾馗なり。天下の虚耗妖孽を厭わん」と見たまう故に、道士に命じてその形を描かせ天下に伝えるという。

○ Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Jikoku Ten'ō) / Tramples gandharvas and piśācas underfoot and guards the eastern direction. He is the first of the Four Heavenly Kings.
○ Virūḍhaka (Zōchō Ten'ō) / Tramples kumbhāṇḍas and pretas underfoot and guards the southern direction. He is the second of the Four Heavenly Kings.
○ Virūpākṣa (Kōmoku Ten'ō) / Tramples dragons and pūtanas underfoot, establishes the dharma realm, and guards the western direction.
○ Vaiśravaṇa (Bishamon Ten'ō) / Tramples yakṣas and rākṣasas underfoot and guards the northern direction. Also called Great Compassionate Tamon Ten'ō.

○ Skanda (Idaten) is a guardian deity of Buddhist law. When the demon king stole the Buddha's relics and fled, he pursued and retrieved them. Zen temples enshrine him in the kitchen.
○ Zhong Kui: Emperor Minghuang of Tang saw in a dream "I am Zhong Kui, a scholar from Zhongnan. I will ward off the empty consumption and evil spirits of the realm." Therefore, he ordered Daoist priests to paint his form and spread it throughout the land.
