現代語訳
《解説：旅泊のことなので一晩中眠れずにいて、暁かと驚いた様子を言う。山へ入りかかる月影が森へ差し込んだため空もきらめいて、川端の紅葉の間から漁火の漁をする火が、愁いに満ちた眠りの一眠りしてさっぱりと覚めぬ目に向かい合って見える。さては夜が深い。しかし夜が明けたかと疑って聞けば、姑蘇城外の山寺の夜半の鐘の声が手前の乗っている舟へ聞こえるから、夜がまだ明けないのを知るということである》

《Commentary: Since this concerns lodging while traveling, he could not sleep through the night and describes his startled state wondering if dawn had come. The moonlight entering the mountains cast its shadow into the forest, making the sky shimmer, and the fishing fires among the autumn maples by the riverside appear before his eyes that had briefly slept a troubled sleep and awakened unrefreshed. So the night is deep. But when he listens doubtfully wondering if dawn has come, the sound of the temple bell at midnight from the mountain temple outside Gusu city can be heard reaching the boat he is aboard, and thus he knows that dawn has not yet broken.》
