塞上にして笛の吹くを聞く
雪清く胡天に馬を牧して還る
月明らかにして羌笛戍楼の間
借問す梅花何れの処にか落つ
風吹いて一夜関山に満つ
《割書：雪もちらちらと空に映じて見える時分、野飼いにて置いた馬を引き連れて帰ったところ、誰かは知らず月明の夜すがら羌笛を戍楼のあたりで》
《割書：吹くがだんだん吹き続けて落梅の曲に至る。借問して承りたいものだ。今は落梅のない時分なのに、いずれの処からどこへ落ちてあの曲を吹くことぞ。風に吹き散らされて夜もすがら関山の中に満ちて、誰聞かぬものはない。この曲を聞いては、この所へ征伐に来ている者は故郷の思いを引き起こして悲しかろうという意なり》

Hearing the Flute Played on the Frontier
Snow pure, in the barbarian sky, herding horses, they return
Moon bright,羌 flutes in the watchtowers
I ask: plum blossoms, where do they fall?
Wind blows, filling the border mountains through one night

[Commentary in smaller text: The playing continues and reaches the melody of "Falling Plums." I would like to ask and learn: this is not the season when plum blossoms fall, so from where to where do they fall as that melody is played? Scattered by the wind, it fills the border mountains throughout the night, and there is no one who does not hear it. The meaning is that those who have come here on military campaigns, upon hearing this melody, would recall thoughts of their homeland and feel sorrow]
