十里の黄雲白日暮れ
北風雁を吹いて雪紛々
愁うること莫かれ前路知己無きことを
天下誰人か君を識らざらん
《割書：鼻の先に見渡す所を十里という。このあたりを見回せば、空も薄曇りて雪を催す白日の夕暮れなれば、北風なども吹き来て雁を南に吹き送り、果たして雪がふんふんと降ってものすごい折から、旅へ行かれるとなり。莫愁は慰める詞なり。そこ元は手前のような親しい友達に別れれば、前路で知己な者がないことを気の毒に思し召すな。そこもとは器量優れた人なれば、行く先で重んじ君を待ち受けるであろうほどに、憂えずに気象にして行かれよとなり》

Yellow clouds for ten li, white sun sets
North wind blows the geese, snow falls densely
Do not grieve that there are no close friends on the path ahead

[Commentary in smaller text: "Ten li" refers to what can be seen stretching to the horizon. Looking around this area, the sky is overcast and threatening snow. As it is the evening of a white day, the north wind blows, sending the geese southward, and indeed the snow falls thickly in this harsh moment when you depart on your journey. "Mo chou" (do not grieve) is a word of comfort. Do not feel sorry that you, parting from close friends like myself, will have no intimate companions on the road ahead. Since you are a person of outstanding character, people along your way will respect and welcome you, so do not worry but go forth with good spirits.]
