《割書：柳もさかへ参差（しんし）と長（なが）い短（みじか）い枝（えだ）たれて女中の居る画楼（くわらう）をおほひしげつてあることに｜あかつき方／鶯（うぐひす）などか此柳のほとりでないてゐるが見るうへきく上がみな満宮（まんきう）のかなしみの｜たねとなる年〳〵花はちつて行（ゆけ）どもおくふかきゆへ人の来りみるものもなくむなし｜く水上に落散（おちちり）て春泉（しゆんせん）のなかれををひ御溝（ごこう）をながれ出るのみしや下心は此花の落（をち）｜しごとく年も寄（より）顔色（がんしよく）も衰（をとろ）へゆけども宮中にゐれば人も見しらす空（むな）しく老（おい）ゆく事じや》【挿絵】

宮怨 司馬礼
柳色参差として画楼を掩う 暁鶯啼きて送る満宮の愁い
年々花落ちて人の見る無し 空しく春泉を逐いて御溝を出づ
《注釈：柳も栄えて参差と長い短い枝が垂れて、女中の居る画楼を覆い茂っていることよ。暁方、鶯などがこの柳のほとりで鳴いているが、見る上に聞く上が皆満宮（宮中全体）の悲しみの種となる。年々花は散って行くけれども、奥深い故に人の来て見る者もなく、空しく水上に落ち散って春泉の流れを追い、御溝を流れ出るのみである。下心（真意）は、この花の落ちるが如く年も寄り顔色も衰えて行くけれども、宮中に居れば人も見知らず、空しく老いゆくことである》【挿絵】

Palace Lament - Sima Li
Willow colors unevenly draping over the painted tower, dawn warblers cry sending forth the sorrow of the entire palace
Year after year flowers fall with no one to see, emptily following the spring stream out through the imperial ditch
Commentary: The willows flourish luxuriantly, their long and short branches hanging unevenly, covering and overshadowing the painted tower where the court ladies reside. At dawn, warblers sing near these willows, but both what is seen and what is heard all become sources of sorrow for the entire palace. Year after year the flowers scatter and fall, but because the palace is so deep and secluded, no one comes to see them. They fall emptily onto the water's surface, following the spring stream's flow and flowing out through the imperial ditch. The underlying meaning is that just as these flowers fall, she too ages and her beauty fades, but living in the palace depths, no one notices her, and she grows old in vain. [Illustration]
