現代語訳
ここに江州（滋賀県）伊吹山辺りに住む悟（さとり）という妖怪がいて、変化の術に長けていたので、近年諸国化け道修行もつ腹にて化け物仲間を驚かすほどの者がいると聞き、あらゆる諸国を巡り回って化け比べをしようと思い立ち、越後の国米山峠にさしかかったところ、

一陣の生臭い風が夫婦で吹いて来て、一群の黒雲が大きな笠のようになると見えたが、雲中にとても恐ろしい姿の化け物がすっくと立って、悟に食らいつこうと近寄れば、心得たりと同じく雨を呼び風を起こし、すさまじい形となって朱盤を目がけて飛びかかり、しばし戦うと見えたが、悟は術抜群に優れていたので、ついに朱盤は這う這うの体で逃げ去った。

英語訳
Here there was a yokai called Satori living around Mt. Ibuki in Gōshū (Shiga Prefecture), who was skilled in transformation arts. Having recently heard that there was someone in the various provinces who was so accomplished in the way of monsters that he could astonish fellow monsters with his transformations, Satori decided to travel around all the provinces to compete in shape-shifting contests. A gust of foul wind came blowing like a married couple, and a cluster of black clouds appeared to form like a great hat. From within the clouds, a terrifyingly shaped monster stood upright. As it approached to attack Satori, he understood what was happening and likewise summoned rain and raised wind, taking on a fearsome form and flying at Shuban. They seemed to battle for a while, but since Satori's techniques were exceptionally superior, Shuban finally fled in complete defeat.
