さても朱盤は邪眼道法を使って化け自慢をして悟に出会ったが、這う這うの体で逃げ去ったので、邪眼は朱盤の術を見物しようと大木の陰で様子を窺っていた。そのうち朱盤が旅の化け物と化け比べをする様子になったが、真の闇でどちらとも見分けがたいうち、たちまち一方が逃げ去った。その敵なれば、さては

旅の化け物であったのかと見るところに、そうではなく朱盤が逃げ去ったのであれば、初めの高見の見物にも逃げ、あまりにももろく負けたのを可笑しくも思っているうち、どこからか朱盤が現れ出て「さてさて面目もない仕合わせかな。されども、かの者は北方の術なり」と舌を巻き、まず打ち連れて手持ち無沙汰になる。
立ち帰るふりをして思いがけなく
後ろから邪眼の頭へ食らいつき、「これは」というまもあらばこそ、食い伏せ食い伏せ、ついに食らい殺してしまった。

英語訳
Now, Shuban had used his evil eye sorcery to boast of his transformations when he encountered Satori, but fled in complete defeat. So Jagan (Evil Eye) was hiding in the shadow of a large tree, watching to observe Shuban's techniques. While he was watching, it seemed that Shuban was about to compete in transformations with a traveling monster, but in the pitch darkness it was difficult to distinguish between them. Suddenly one of them fled.
