現代語訳
天狗は女の高慢なことは夢にも知らないものを、伝介が口を叩いたので、そぞろ歩きして人の目には見えないが、引き窓から覗いたり、的から見るか、油断はならず。鼻をつけながら、このご女御ん、これはさしずめ大天狗のお奥様。
羽織を着た夜這いの井の内の蛙【野望の井の内の蛙】。世間のことは知らず、「われより器用で良い、発明なものはない」と思い、何事にも差し出して、身代はわれで持っているつもり。扇子なりよう、見当違いで恐れ多い。茄子の鴫焼きと人に言われるけれども、天狗の方へは向きなし。
白物、櫛笄でも流行りの色、人が先にしたが事は、手前の思いつきという顔をして、高慢が鼻の先に見え、これを「鼻の先」という事、自然と天狗より始まった事なり。

The tengu had never even dreamed of women's arrogance, but because Densuke spoke up, he now wanders about looking. While pressing his nose forward, this lady here is surely the wife of a great tengu.
Wearing a haori, she's like a frog in a well with wild ambitions. Knowing nothing of the world, she thinks "there's nothing more skillful, excellent, or clever than myself." She meddles in everything, believing she possesses great wealth. With her fan and such - how presumptuous and outrageous! Though people call her "grilled snipe eggplant," she pays no heed to the tengu.
White goods, combs and hairpins in fashionable colors - even things others did first, she acts as if they were her own ideas. Her arrogance shows at the tip of her nose. This expression "tip of the nose" naturally originated from the tengu.
