現代語訳
八百万年も昔から天狗に女はいないものを、伝介の口車のせいで、いよいよ女の天狗を作るつもりになり、鞍馬のずっと奥へより合いをつけ、大峰の前鬼が一等、葛城、高間、平、吉川、高雄をはじめ相談を決め、慢心なる者は我が道へ入れんと、きわまり悪いさらうつもりになった。
けれども女をさらうというのは、いかにしても世間の聞こえが悪い。「運が良く深くて金にでもするつもりだ」と思われてはなんとも気の毒。高慢だからさらうと思えばよいが、どうしても人の口には咎め立てられぬと、なかなか天狗も内気なもので、今度の役は伝介がよかろうと、女才のないところを見込んで言いつけた。
その他、慢心なる粋な男、おびただしく着飾れども、もし女をさらい、その場より駆け落ちしまいものでもなしと、込み入ったところへ気をつけ、何から何まで抜け目もなく、天狗のようだとはよく例えたものなり。

英語訳
For eight million years, there had never been female tengu, but because of Densuke's persuasive words, they finally decided to create female tengu. They set up a meeting deep in the mountains of Kurama, and with Zenki of Omine taking the lead, along with Katsuragi, Takama, Hira, Yoshikawa, and Takao, they decided in council to bring conceited people into their way - with the extremely wicked intention of abducting them.
However, abducting women would surely give them a bad reputation in society. If people thought "they're lucky and cunning, probably doing it for money," that would be truly pitiful. It would be fine to think they're abducting them because of their arrogance, but since people's tongues would inevitably find fault, even the tengu are quite shy by nature. They decided Densuke would be best for this job, seeing his lack of feminine wiles and assigning him the task.
Besides this, there are numerous conceited fashionable men, extravagantly dressed, but if they were to abduct women and then elope on the spot, that wouldn't be proper either. Being attentive to such complicated situations, being thorough in everything without oversight - "like a tengu" is indeed a well-made comparison.
