すぎばかりある
山のなかへつれきたれけれはそふたい
しやふとおほしきはくはつたる

現代語訳
程なく伝介は、うっそうとした杉ばかりある山の中へ連れて来られたが、そうした大将と思しき白髪の赤ら顔の上着に描かれた人がいたので、どうか見たような人だなと思い、ようやく思い出した。確か我が様の和尚様であろうとのみ、心の中で平伏する。
「驕り高ぶりよりも慢心なるものを、油揚げのようにさらって魔道に入れ、大天狗小天狗集まって天狗数万騎のその下に付けられども、日本諸国と言えども、なかなか辛国にて容易には行かず。その中でも高慢にて、何でも物事を貶し、辛み噌をぶちまけ、自分ばかり利口であるように口をきき、世間に人がないように思い、上がり天狗と様付けをせず、その咎めによって、多くは魔道へ引き入れられるのである。」

英語訳
Before long, Densuke was brought into a mountain dense with nothing but cedar trees, where there was what appeared to be a general with white hair and a red face depicted on a garment. Thinking "I feel like I've seen this person before," he gradually remembered - surely this must be our temple's head priest - and bowed respectfully in his heart.
"Rather than mere arrogance, those with excessive pride are snatched up like fried tofu and brought into the demon realm. Great tengu and small tengu gather, and though they are placed under tens of thousands of tengu cavalry, even throughout all the provinces of Japan, this is quite a harsh country and not easily accomplished. Among them are those who are haughty, disparaging everything, spilling bitter complaints, speaking as if only they are clever, thinking there are no other people in the world, and not showing proper respect even to superior tengu. Due to this transgression, many are drawn into the demon realm."
