現代語訳
「天狗というものは市中の良民とは、きつい近いなものなんでも攫っていきそうなものであるけれども、そのような事は決してなし。摘まれた高慢で、やい、それぞれに商人となし、衣屋や立付け屋や扇売り坊やありー、いつかどの町屋にて入用なものは買い上げ、人を倒す事はなく、これでは高慢もいいそうなものなり。」

"Tengu may seem like beings who would snatch away anything from the good citizens of the city, but they never do such things. Those who were taken due to their arrogance now work as various merchants - clothing dealers, tailors, fan sellers, and such. When they need something from any shop in town, they purchase it properly and never harm people. In this way, even arrogance seems acceptable."
