現代語訳
伝介は高慢中間の中でも利口に立ち回り、天狗の方から子頭に言いつけられて、立付け（仕立て）を入用として、下の者たちを取り扱っている。
そもそも子頭の立付けというのは、このような理屈であるべきだ。すべてこの葉天狗に至るまで、鼻は持参ではなく、高い柴漬けに突きしもの。心は満身でも、並みより鼻の低い者もある。
ここらのところを伝介が工夫して、みなの者に一つずつ渡しておいたのは、そまなど（山の者など）が見つけた時のためである。そまが山中で立付けを履いていれば、麓などでは天狗かと思うこともある。小天狗の面は適当になきゆえ、いずれも大天狗の姿となったのである。

Densuke cleverly maneuvered among the arrogant middle-ranking servants and was assigned by the tengu leaders to handle tailoring needs and manage the subordinates.
Generally speaking, the tailoring for sub-leaders should follow this logic: All these leaf-tengu do not have natural noses, but rather ones attached like high pickled vegetables. Though their hearts are full of pride, some have noses lower than average.
Densuke devised a plan for this situation and distributed one item each to everyone as preparation for when mountain dwellers might discover them. When mountain folk wear these tailored items in the mountains, people at the foot of the mountain might mistake them for tengu. Since the small tengu lack proper masks, they all took on the appearance of large tengu.
