伝介は真相をすべて偽りに仕立て上げ、残らず心安くなった。大天狗、小天狗ということについて説明すると、小天狗というのは大天狗より男の覆いが長くあり、覆いが大きくて大小のことも分からないという理屈で、一杯飲みながら尋ねてみれば、三十日のうち一日も休みなく勤めるゆえ大天狗といい、小天狗は一か月に一日休みがあるゆえ小天狗という。そのかわり大天狗の小遣いは一日五十文ずつ、小天狗は二十四文ずつ。それゆえ間道の慰みの場で五十を大といい、二十四文を小という。大小の分けはこの通りだと話す。
伝介は才走った者で、こせこせと目配りして立ち回っているのに、不審な服装もないのにお疲れのようですが、どういたした事でお上様にはお近づきになされませんかと、ねじり返すと、「うぬしもとんだことを言うものだ。天狗に女があるものか。とんでもない」と挨拶すれば、「なるほど、ついに見たものも聞いたこともございませんが、こう申せばいかがでしょう。お子様方のことを天狗の素立ちと申します。女はなくて子ができるはずもなし。小天狗様を女かと思えばそうでもなし。『なんぼない』とおっしゃっても、今時の天狗様に油断はならぬ」と理屈で詰める。
