耶蘇の一生を思はせられ、當時の風俗も見られるのをうれしく思つ
た。奇蹟が多すぎるがそれは映畫としては感じがあると思つた。耶
蘇になつた人は中々感じを出してゐた。随分大がかりで長いものだ
が新敎の人達が見たら隨分感動するだらうと思つた。自分も見てゐ
て耶蘇のことを今更思ひ出したことを喜んだ。使徒達、ペテロ、ユ
ダ、マリア・マグダレナなぞも感じがあつた。

する。すじは福音書の通りで少しも新しい解釋はないが、そのすじ
に即しながらうまく映畵的にとらへてゐる。實は自分は見ない前に
この映畵は屹度失望するだらうと思つてゐた。それは第一にすじが
常套的なのと、こんな場合最も困るキリストになる役者から來る幻
滅とのためであつた。ところが今度のワーナーのキリストは實にい
い。實に精神的な柔和な、或る點靈的とも云つていゝ程のキリスト
である。動作に何の誇張も、さはがしさもなく、上品な淸らかな性
格をなしてゐる。幾分弱いはに弱い。併しそのために、柔和な、聖
者らしい性格がよく出てゐる。そして内面的には決して弱くない、鋭
さをたしかに示してゐた。殊にやせた手の感じが美しく、淸く、力
がある上乘のキリストである。このキリストのために全體が生きて
ゐる。マリア、ユダ、ピラト、祭司の長等相當である。自分は近頃
見た役者では此のキリストに一等感心した。

「キング・オブ・キングス」は力のある映畵でした。キリストになつ
た役者はさう動かずに崇高な感じを出してゐました。ピラトと對面
のところ等異様な壓するやうなキリストでした。ペテロもユダもよ
かつた。魚を釣ると金貨をくわえてゐるところ等面白かつた。ピラ
トの館から磔刑までは線の太さを感じ橫いつした興味があつた。ラ
ザロの復活の場もすごい感じがした。キリスト一代記として要領良
く印象の深い出來だつた。

實に感心しました。こんないい映畵を見た事は近頃ありません。ほ
んとうにキリストのいい所がよく出て居ると思ひました。映畵も無
駄がなく、ぐんぐん人の心を引きつけて行くのには感心しました。そ
して實に奇麗です。しまひに一寸涙ぐましい氣持ちになりました。實
に感心致しました。

ヤソの傳記を知る爲に十度本を讀むよりも、かかる映畵を一度見た
方が、よくりんかくが頭にはいります。又當時の風俗や其地方の様
がよく解つて敎育的な興味が甚大と思ひます。澤山の民衆の出る畵
面など大がかりな處が殊に面白く思ひました。

キリスト傳の最も完全な映畵への飜譯として何よりもまづ、いや殆
ど全的にマクフアーソンのアダプテーターとしての手腕に敬服させ
られました。

はじめのマクダラのマリアの部分は少し派出すぎると思ひました
が、大體に於て感心しました。聖書の言葉がよく生かされてゐて、見
てゐる中、もう一度聖書を読み直してみたい氣が起りました。キリ
スト役の人は、やりにくい役でせうに、いやみなく、よく演じてゐ
ると思ひました。アーネスト・トウレンスのペテロ役は適役と思ひ
ました。後半の部分。しば〳〵涙ぐまされました。幼い人達に見せ
ても安心であり、且、有益な寫眞と思ひます。

On the Masterpiece "King of Kings"

It made me think of Jesus's life, and I was happy to see the customs of that time. There were too many miracles, but I thought that was effective for a film. The person who played Jesus really brought out the feeling well. It's quite a large-scale and long work, but I thought Protestants would be deeply moved when they see it. I was pleased that watching it made me think of Jesus anew. The apostles, Peter, Judas, and Mary Magdalene also had good feeling.

It's quite a good film. Cinematic scenes unfold one after another. The plot follows the Gospels exactly with no new interpretation whatsoever, but while adhering to that plot, it captures it cinematically very well. Actually, before seeing it, I thought this film would surely disappoint me. That was firstly because the plot was conventional, and secondly because of the disillusionment that comes from the actor playing Christ, which is most troublesome in such cases. However, Warner's Christ this time is truly excellent. He is a truly spiritual, gentle, and in some respects even spiritual enough to be called divine Christ. His movements have no exaggeration or noisiness, forming an elegant and pure character. He is somewhat weak in his weakness. But because of that, his gentle, saint-like character comes out well. And internally he is certainly not weak, definitely showing sharpness. Especially the feeling of his thin hands is beautiful, pure, and a superior Christ with power. Because of this Christ, the whole work lives. Maria, Judas, Pilate, the high priest, etc. are all adequate. Among actors I've seen recently, I was most impressed with this Christ.

"King of Kings" was a powerful film. The actor who played Christ didn't move much but brought out a sublime feeling. In scenes like the confrontation with Pilate, he was a Christ with an unusually oppressive presence. Peter and Judas were also good. The part where they catch fish and find gold coins in their mouths was interesting. From Pilate's palace to the crucifixion, I felt the boldness of the lines and found it overwhelmingly interesting. The scene of Lazarus's resurrection also felt tremendous. As a biography of Christ's life, it was well-organized and deeply impressive.

To learn about Jesus's biography, seeing such a film once gives you a better outline in your head than reading books ten times. I thought the beginning part with Mary Magdalene was a bit too flashy, but overall I was impressed. The words of the Bible were well brought to life, and while watching, I felt like reading the Bible again. The person in the Christ role, though it must be a difficult role, performed it well without being unpleasant. Ernest Torrence in the role of Peter seemed perfectly cast. The latter half of the film often brought me to tears. It's a film that would be safe to show to children and beneficial as well.
