熊谷直実（くまがへなをざね）と平山武者所（ひらやまむしやどころ）と一の谷（たに）の魁（さきがけ）
せし儀（ぎ）をとりて名付也又云 或人（あるひと）のいはく
千弁（せんよう）のものあり喜梅花（せんようのにはざくら）に似（に）たりとぞ是
熊谷（くまがへ）にあらず則（すなはち）是を芸花園（げいくはゑん）にいふ
楊貴妃（やうきひ）なり緋桜（ひざくら）に似（に）て小（ちいさ）し又 単弁（ひとへ）
大 輪（りん）にして色（いろ）紅暈（かうぐん）を帯（たい）し芝山（しばやま）と云
ものに似（に）たるを熊谷（くまがへ）とよぶ是又 非（ひ）也
是は逆手（さかて）桜といふもの也
○活所翁曰桜花の魁（さきがけ）なり二月花を
開（ひら）く彼岸（ひがん）桜に先だつ也 花（はな）小（ちいさく）して重（やゑ）
色（いろ）微（すこ）し赤（あか）しと也
現代語訳
熊谷直実と平敦盛が一ノ谷の戦いで先駆けした故事を取って名付けたものである。また言う、ある人が言うには千弁のものがあり、八重桜に似ているとのことである。これは熊谷桜ではない。すなわちこれを園芸家が楊貴妃と呼ぶものである。緋桜に似て小さい。また一重で大輪にして色が紅暈を帯び、芝山というものに似たものを熊谷と呼ぶのも、これまた間違いである。
これは逆手桜というものである。
○活所翁が曰く、桜花の魁である。二月に花を開く。彼岸桜に先立つ。花は小さくて八重、色は少し赤いとのことである。
英語訳
It was named after the story of Kumagai Naozane and Taira no Atsumori taking the lead at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani. It is also said that someone mentioned there is a thousand-petaled variety that resembles double cherry blossoms. This is not the Kumagai cherry. This is what gardeners call Yōkihi (Yang Guifei). It resembles scarlet cherry but is smaller. Also, calling the single-petaled large-flowered variety with reddish coloring that resembles what is called Shibayama as "Kumagai" is also incorrect.
This is what is called Sakate (reverse hand) cherry.
○Elder Kassho said: It is the pioneer among cherry blossoms. It opens its flowers in the second month, preceding the equinox cherry. The flowers are small and double, with a slightly red color.
