一品也一枝の中に八重と一重と雑（まし）り咲其中に
八重多く一重は少し江戸に似て色薄し
江戸は皆八重也桐谷は八重一重 相雑（あひまじる）元（もと）此木
鎌倉（かまくら）桐谷（きりがやつ）より出故名付 或（ある）古老（こらうの）云（いはく）此花を
一人は八重なりと云又一人は一重なりと云 争論（そうろん）

○怡顔斎が言うには、別名を八重一重、また別名を車返しという。桜の花の中で第一品である。一つの枝の中に八重咲きと一重咲きが混じって咲く。その中では八重が多く一重は少ない。江戸桜に似ているが色は薄い。江戸桜はすべて八重咲きである。桐ヶ谷は八重咲きと一重咲きが混在している。もともとこの木は鎌倉の桐ヶ谷から出たものなのでこの名前が付いた。ある古老が言うには、この花について一人は八重咲きだと言い、また別の一人は一重咲きだと言って論争となり、決着がつかないので二人が車を返して見直すと、一本の木に八重咲きと一重咲きが［混在していた］。

Kirigayatsu (Kirigayatsu Cherry)

○Igansai says: Also called Yae-hitoe (Double-Single), and also called Kurumaga-eshi (Cart Return). This is the finest variety among cherry blossoms. On a single branch, double-petaled and single-petaled flowers bloom mixed together. Among these, there are many double flowers and few single ones. It resembles Edo cherry but the color is lighter. Edo cherry is entirely double-petaled. Kirigayatsu has both double and single petals mixed together. Originally this tree came from Kirigayatsu in Kamakura, hence the name. An old man said that regarding this flower, one person claimed it was double-petaled while another insisted it was single-petaled, leading to an argument. Unable to settle the dispute, the two men turned their cart around to look again, and saw that on one tree there were both double and single [flowers mixed together].
