交（まじ）り咲 各（おの〳〵）いふ所 両義（りやうぎ）とも合（がつ）しぬ仍（よつ）て車
返と号 桜中（あふちう）第一也江戸桜も此桐谷の変（へん）
なりされど桐谷は落花（らくくは）余念（よねん）なく散（ちり）がたの
心よきもの也江戸は花 劣（をと）らねど散（ち）らず枝に
しぼみつく也是桐谷の勝（すぐ）れたりとす活所翁
も桜の第一にして白色（はくしき）微（すこ）し紅（くれなゐ）也 茎（くき）最（もつとも）
長（なが）しといへり又 泉州（せんしう）堺（さかい）慈恩寺（じおんじ）の地内（ぢない）に
車返（くるまがへし）といへる桜あり是は品ならず

一重といふ也 種類（しゆるい）にして同名別物（とうめいべつぶつ）也
現代語訳
混じって咲いている。それぞれが言うところの両方の説とも合致した。そこで車返しと名付けた。桜の中で第一である。江戸桜もこの桐ヶ谷の変種である。しかし桐ヶ谷は落花に未練なく散りやすく、心地よいものである。江戸桜は花では劣らないが散らずに枝でしぼんでしまう。これは桐ヶ谷が優れているとされる。活所翁も桜の第一品種として、白色でわずかに紅を帯び、茎が最も長いと言っている。また泉州堺の慈恩寺の境内に
車返しという桜があるが、これは良品種ではない。
○鈍永が言うには、摂津国藍村という所の田の中に大木が一株ある。花は桐ヶ谷の八重である。毎年一重ずつ減って咲き、八年目ごとに一重になる。九年目ごとに元の八重となる。これもまた八重一重という。種類は同じで同名だが別物である。
英語訳
blooming mixed together. Both explanations that each person gave were correct. Therefore it was named Kurumaga-eshi (Cart Return). It is the finest among cherries. Edo cherry is also a variant of this Kirigayatsu. However, Kirigayatsu scatters readily without lingering attachment to falling petals, which is pleasant. Edo cherry is not inferior in flower quality but does not scatter, instead withering while attached to the branch. In this regard, Kirigayatsu is considered superior. Elder Kassho also called it the finest cherry variety, with white color slightly tinged with crimson and the longest stems. Also, at Jion-ji temple in Sakai, Senshu Province, there is
a cherry called Kurumaga-eshi, but this is not a fine variety.
○Donnei says: In a place called Aimura in Tsu Province, there is one large tree in the middle of a rice field. The flowers are double like Kirigayatsu. Each year they bloom with one less layer of petals, becoming single-petaled every eighth year. Every ninth year they return to the original double form. This is also called Yae-hitoe (Double-Single). It is the same species with the same name but a different plant.
