二種ともに桐谷の変化（へんくは）也此楼間 元（もと）仙洞（せんとう）
御所（ごしよ）より出るとぞ則 後水尾院（ごみづのをのゐん）の勅（みことのり）ありて
仙院（せんゐん）の楼下（ろうか）の間（あい）に桐谷の実（み）を植（うへ）さしめ
給ふ故に楼間と号（なづく）今 聖護院（しやうごゐん）青蓮院（しやうれんゐん）
及び堂上方（たうしやうがた）の御庭（おには）に多し其 種（たね）を植（うへ）
接（つぎ）て士庶（ししよ）の家（いへ）にも漫（はびこれ）り今所々に有
又 清水谷殿（しみづたにどの）御庭に一 株（ちう）楼間の実植（みうへ）
あり予 目繋（めきゝ）す単弁（ひとへ）にて花形は海（かい）
棠（どう）に似（に）たり是楼間の変（へん）也別種にあらす
現代語訳
二種ともに桐谷の変化種である。この楼間は元々仙洞御所より出たという。すなわち後水尾院の勅命があって、仙院の楼下の間に桐谷の種を植えさせられたため、楼間と名付けられた。今は聖護院、青蓮院および堂上方の御庭に多い。その種を植え継ぎして士庶の家にも広がり、今は所々にある。
また清水谷殿の御庭に一株、楼間の実生があり、私が目にした。一重咲きで花形は海棠に似ている。これは楼間の変種であり、別種ではない。
英語訳
Both varieties are variations of Kiritani. This Rōma originally came from the Sentō Imperial Palace. Namely, there was an imperial decree from Emperor Go-Mizunoo to plant Kiritani seeds in the space beneath the palace corridors, hence it was named Rōma (corridor space). Now there are many in the gardens of Shōgo-in, Shōren-in, and the court nobles' residences. Those seeds have been planted and propagated, spreading even to the homes of samurai and commoners, and now exist in various places.
Also, in Lord Shimizutani's garden there is one plant of Rōma grown from seed, which I have observed. It has single flowers and the flower form resembles crabapple (kaidō). This is a variation of Rōma, not a separate species.
