○怡顔斎曰 木（き）葉（は）とも常（つね）の桜に似（に）て
小（ちいさき）花 簇（むらがり）生（しやう）し穂（ほ）をなす花は観（み）るに
足（た）らず即一名 奈天（なでん）或は上溝（うはみぞ）といふ
但（たゞし）南殿（なんでん）の桜の中略（ちうりやく）なでんと見誤（みあやま）るべ
からず別（べつ）也此 犬桜（いぬざくら）の実（み）六月に熟（じゆく）す
其 色（いろ）黄（き）にして味（あぢは）ひ杏仁（きやうにん）に似たり

○怡顔斎が言うには「木も葉も普通の桜に似ているが、小さな花が群がって生えて穂状になる。花は観賞するに値しない。すなわち別名を奈天（なでん）、或いは上溝（うわみぞ）と言う。ただし南殿の桜の略称である『なでん』と見間違えてはならない。別物である。この犬桜の実は六月に熟する。その色は黄色で、味は杏仁に似ている。物好きな人は塩漬けにして酒のつまみにする」。

○ Igen-sai says: "Both the wood and leaves resemble those of ordinary cherry trees, but small flowers cluster together forming spikes. The flowers are not worth viewing for ornamental purposes. It is also called 'naden' or 'uwamizo.' However, one must not mistake it for 'naden,' which is an abbreviation of Nanden cherry - they are different species. The fruits of this dog cherry ripen in the sixth month. Their color is yellow and the taste resembles apricot kernels. Enthusiasts preserve them in salt and use them as accompaniments for sake."
