いにしへの奈良の都の八重さくら
けふ九重に匂ひぬるかな
と有 各（をの〳〵）当意即妙（たうゐそくめう）なる事（こと）万人（ばんじん）感（かん）
歎（たん）し宮中（きうちう）鼓動（こどう）すと云々又同し御時
南都（なら）南円堂（なんゑんどう）の前（まへ）に大（おほき）なる八重桜一木
あり天下の名花（めいくは）なればとて興福寺（こうぶくじ）
別当（へつたう）に仰（おほせ）て禁庭（きんてい）へ移（うつ）し植（うへ）給はんとて
既（すで）に引 時（とき）に至（いた）り僧徒等（そうとら）これを怒（いか）り
たとひ罪（つみ）を得（う）るとも此 名木（めいぼく）を他所（たしよ）へ
やらじといどみ合（あひ）ける此よし女院（にようゐん）聞（きこ）し召
衆徒（しゆと）の心ばへいとやさしと感（かん）じさせ給ひ
伊賀（いかの）国 余野庄（よのゝしやう）をよせられ花の比（ころ）は宿（との）
直（ゐ）を付 守（まも）らせられしと也
現代語訳
いにしえの奈良の都の八重桜
今日九重に匂いぬるかな
とあった。それぞれが当意即妙であることを万人が感嘆し、宮中が騒然となったという。また同じ御時代に、
南都（奈良）の南円堂の前に大きな八重桜の木が一本
あり、天下の名花であるからということで興福寺の
別当に命じて禁庭へ移し植えようとされて、
すでに引き抜こうという時に至り、僧徒等がこれを怒り、
「たとえ罪を得るとも、この名木を他所へは
やらない」と抵抗し合った。このことを女院がお聞きになり、
衆徒の心ばえを大変優雅であると感じられ、
伊賀国余野荘を寄進され、花の頃には宿直を付けて
守らせられたということである。

"The double cherry blossoms of ancient Nara's capital
Today spread their fragrance in the nine-fold palace"
Everyone admired the aptness and wit of this poem, and the entire palace was stirred to excitement. Also during the same reign,
there stood a large double cherry tree in front of
Nanen-dō in the southern capital (Nara).
Since it was a famous flower renowned throughout the land, the court commanded the
head administrator of Kōfuku-ji temple to transplant it to the imperial garden.
When the time came to uproot the tree, the monks became angry,
saying "Even if we incur punishment, we will not let
this famous tree go elsewhere," and they resisted fiercely.
When the Empress Dowager heard of this matter,
she was moved by the refined sentiment of the monks and
granted them Yono-no-shō estate in Iga Province, and during cherry blossom season, appointed
guards to protect the tree.
