現代語訳
後藤氏（京都の艮山）がこの地に来て、すべての温泉を試み、深く考察した結果、荒湯は無双の良湯であるから、これを第一とし、諸病にはこの湯に入るべきである。御所の湯・まんだら湯は荒湯と同じく性質が良く、特に足腰の立たなくなった人や中風の老人などが長く入浴するのに良い。中の湯は毒湯であるから、決して使用してはならないと定められた。
その後を継いだ椿庵、門人の秀庵（香川氏）らの著した書物に、次第に詳しく論じられるようになった。そのため世間もその不思議な効能があることを知り、遠い道のりをいとわず、険しい山道を厭わず、こぞって行くことが世の習いとなった。
○温泉五つの次第
○荒湯（新湯） （別名：口の湯、また山口の湯とも言う）
下の町の入り口にある。この湯は非常に熱く、清潔である。一つの湯を二つに仕切って、一の湯・二の湯という。入込（男女混浴の共同浴場）と幕湯（仕切りのある浴場）とを、一日交替で互い違いに入れ替え、日が暮れると幕湯をやめて、中の行灯に（灯をともして）……

Goto (of Gonzan in Kyoto) came to this place, tried all of the hot springs thoroughly, and after deep consideration concluded that the Arayu was an incomparable superior spring. He established it as the foremost bath, declaring that all manner of ailments should be treated by entering this spring. The Gosho-no-yu and Mandara-yu were deemed to have equally good properties to the Arayu, and were found to be particularly beneficial for those who had become bedridden or elderly patients suffering from palsy (stroke), who should bathe in them for extended periods. The Naka-no-yu was declared a "poison bath" and it was firmly established that it must never be used.
Subsequently, his successor Chin'an and his disciple Shūan (of the Kagawa family) and others wrote works that gradually elaborated upon these findings in greater detail. As a result, the general public came to know of the remarkable efficacy of these springs, and regardless of the great distances involved or the ruggedness of the mountain roads, it became common practice for people to flock here in great numbers.
○ The Order of the Five Hot Springs
○ Arayu (New Bath) (Also known as: Kuchi-no-yu, or alternatively Yamaguchi-no-yu)
Located at the entrance of the lower town. This bath is extremely hot and clean. A single bath is divided into two sections, called "First Bath" (ichi-no-yu) and "Second Bath" (ni-no-yu). The communal mixed bath (irikomi) and the curtained bath (maku-yu) are alternated daily on a rotating basis.
