効能があるように見えても、体を冷やし、瘡（かさ）を内に追い込んでしまうため、再発した時には、その病気が以前より百倍にもなり、あるいは急死することもあって、その害は計り知れない。
それゆえ、この湯に入ることを戒め、四禁のひとつとしている。
常湯（じょうゆ） 上湯（かみゆ）とも呼ぶ
中の湯の左手にある。この湯には効能はあるが、新湯（あらゆ）には及ばない。もし新湯に人が多い時は、この湯に入るとよい。効き目があることも時にはある。
御所の湯
上の町の右側にある。あら湯と性質が同じであるため、詳しくは述べない。あら湯の功能の箇所で確認されたい。とりわけ中風（脳卒中）の老人や、病後の人が長く入ることで効能がある。
まんだら湯
御所の湯の向かい、半丁ほど奥まったところにある。湯壺は二つある。
東側はあら湯と性質が同じで、瘡（かさ）を発して功能も同じであるため、詳しくは述べない。あら湯の箇所で確認されたい。とりわけこの湯はこの地の根元の湯であり、まことに霊湯である。

(Continuing from the section on Naka-no-Yu)
Although it may appear to have beneficial effects, it cools the body and drives the sores (skin afflictions) inward, so that when the condition recurs, the illness becomes a hundredfold worse than before, and in some cases may even cause sudden death—the harm is incalculable.
For this reason, entering this bath is cautioned against and listed as one of the Four Prohibitions.
Jō-no-Yu (also called Kami-yu / Upper Bath)
Located to the left of Naka-no-Yu. While this bath does have beneficial effects, it does not compare to the Ara-yu (New Bath). If the Ara-yu is crowded, one may enter this bath instead. It does occasionally show notable results.
Gosho-no-Yu (The Imperial Bath)
Located on the right side of the upper district (Kami-no-machi). Since its properties are the same as the Ara-yu, detailed explanation is omitted here; please refer to the section on the Ara-yu's efficacies. It is particularly effective for elderly people suffering from chūbu (apoplexy/stroke) and those recovering from illness who bathe in it for an extended period.
Mandara-yu
Located across from the Gosho-no-Yu, set back approximately half a chō (about 55 meters). There are two bath tubs.
The eastern one shares the same properties as the Ara-yu, promoting the eruption of skin ailments with the same efficacy; detailed explanation is therefore omitted—please refer to the section on the Ara-yu. This bath in particular is the original, foundational spring of this land and is truly a sacred, spiritually potent hot spring.
