それより金時が中に入って、双方を和睦させようと色々と理解を説き、年寄って苦労な骨折りなり。
なるほど狐・狸が見越し入道は化け物でないと言うのももっともだ。また何でも形を変じ化けるゆえ、狐・狸が化け物の頭だと思うのも深く、そのわけは自由自在に化けられるから、昔も梅干しに化けて人間に食われた事があるそうで、してみれば互いに劣らぬ化け物なれども、見越し入道は昔から化け物の大将という事はお子様方がよく御存知なれば、今更狐を頭とも定めがたし。狸は格別、狐は神通を得たる者なれば、この威光化けさえしなければ見越し入道の支配を受けるにも及ばず。その他は今後狸をはじめ、連れも見越し入道の支配を受けるべしと言い渡す。

Then Kintoki entered between them, trying to make peace between both sides by explaining various reasons, which was quite laborious work for an old man.
Indeed, it is reasonable for the fox and tanuki to say that Mikoshi-nyūdō is not a yōkai. However, since anything can transform and shapeshift, it is also understandable to think that foxes and tanuki are the leaders of yōkai. The reason is that they can transform freely - it is said that long ago, one even transformed into a pickled plum and was eaten by a human. Looking at it this way, while they are yōkai no less capable than each other, Mikoshi-nyūdō has been known since ancient times as the general of yōkai, as you children well know, so it would be difficult to suddenly designate the fox as the leader. Tanuki are one thing, but foxes have attained supernatural powers, so if they don't use this威光 (supernatural authority) to shapeshift, they need not submit to Mikoshi-nyūdō's rule. For all others, from now on, starting with the tanuki and their companions, they shall submit to Mikoshi-nyūdō's rule.
