水戸藩の浪士・藤田小四郎らは攘夷を主たる目的とし、常陸・下野の地に兵を挙げ筑波山を拠点とした。武田耕雲斎はこれに加わり共に謀り、京都に上って事情を訴えようとした。元治元年（1864年）十一月、見兵八百をもって中山道を上った。幕府は沿道の諸藩に命じてこれを撃たせた。武田らは進みながら上州諸藩の兵を破り、信州に入り、まさに和田峠を越えようとした。〇十一月某日、諏訪藩はこれを和田峠にて撃ち、大いに戦い、双方に死傷者が出た。〇和道は高遠藩の命を受け、同月同日某時頃、早駕籠に乗り宮木駅を出発し、小野駅で継ぎ立てをして、同夜某時頃に塩尻駅に到着し、その方面の偵察を行った。その概況は以下のとおりである。

The rōshi (masterless samurai) of the Mito domain, led by Fujita Kojirō and others, raised troops in the provinces of Hitachi and Shimotsuke with the primary aim of expelling foreigners (jōi), and established their base at Mount Tsukuba. Takeda Kōunsai joined them and together they plotted to travel to Kyoto to appeal their cause. In the eleventh month of Genji 1 (1864), they marched up the Nakasendō highway with an estimated force of eight hundred men. The shogunate ordered the domains along the route to intercept and attack them. As they advanced, Takeda's forces defeated the troops of various Kōzuke (Jōshū) domain forces and entered Shinano Province, where they were about to cross the Wada Pass. 〇On a certain day in the eleventh month, the Suwa domain attacked them at Wada Pass; a great battle ensued, with casualties on both sides. 〇 Kazumichi, acting under orders from the Takatō domain, departed from Miyaki post station by express palanquin at a certain hour on that same day and month, arranged a relay at Ono post station, and arrived at Shiojiri post station at a certain hour that same night, where he conducted reconnaissance of the situation in that area.
