At that time, the turmoil in the Kami-Ina district was extraordinary. In particular, at Hiraide post station, people were so worried about the fires of war that they packed up their household belongings, and there was not a single elderly person, child, or woman who did not evacuate. However, the village officials and able-bodied men (sōtei) remained behind, obeyed the domain's orders, and each fulfilled their respective duties.
〇 Kazumichi, Satō Ruiji, and one other person were ordered that night to conduct reconnaissance in the direction of Suwa. Accordingly, leading several hunters, they departed from the Seizan encampment deep in the night. The sky was cold and the frost lay heavy. At dawn, they reached the hills behind Suwa and looked out, but the Suwa area was quiet and gave no indication that rōshi were present. They therefore returned to the Seizan encampment, but found that it had already been struck and there was no one remaining.
