Perhaps wearied by the battle of the previous night and the long march, the post town of Matsushima lay in complete stillness and quiet. We hastened to the encampment at Tenjinyama and gave a full report on the conditions at Sawazoko, Nagaoka Shinden, Matsushima, and other locations.
We later heard the following account: that same night, at the encampment at Shōtenbara, Ōya Kanji urged: "Now is the opportunity — it must not be missed. We should attack the rōshi at Matsushima tonight." However, Unit Commander Okano Kohēji had reservations and ultimately did not adopt this plan. This was because Matsushima was not within Takatō domain territory.
