What should the parents who go on proxy pilgrimages do?
Making vows to the gods and praying to Buddha all arise from women's romantic feelings. With unreasonable vows, they abstain from foods cooked with fire and salt, and make pledges like "I will never eat spiders or centipedes for the rest of my life" - such abstinences are innocent and amusing. A certain lady's daughter caused a great commotion this year with what they call "intermittent fever." When such things happen, there are prayers at various temples and mountains, and proxy pilgrims are dispatched to places like Tosaki and others among the lady's attendants. As is well known, since Zoshigaya Hori-no-uchi extends until evening falls, it's a matter of who goes and who goes.
