歌舞伎（かぶき）三階（さんかい）図会（づゑ）に曰（いわく）
にんめんのなまづは【人面の鯰は】いちやう【一陽】
らいふく【来復】のときやうき【陽気】はしめて【初めて】はつするのころ
しばゐへあらはれ【芝居へ現れ】くけあらに【公家荒（悪役）に】くみして【与して】さま〴〵
ふぜん【不善】をなしじつ事し【実事師＝善人役】のためには
はなはだとくき【毒気】になり
もしこのうを【魚】のどくきに
あたりたるときは團十郎もぐさを
したゝかにすへべし
たちどころにとくをけすなり
またこのうをのほねを
たてたるときしばらく〳〵と
三べんとなへてのどを
なでべしきみやうに

現代語訳
歌舞伎三階図会によると、
人面の鯰は一陽来復の時、陽気が初めて発する頃に芝居に現れ、公家悪（悪役）に与してさまざまな悪事を働く。実事師（善人役）にとっては非常に毒気のある存在である。
もしこの魚の毒気に当たった時は、市川團十郎の灸をしっかりと据えるべし。たちまち毒を消すのである。
またこの魚の骨を立てた時は「しばらく」と三回唱えて喉を撫でるべし。見事に抜けるのである。
いやはや、とんでもない毒魚である。
地震の鯰は「万歳楽々」と言うけれども、この鯰は「しばらく」と言えばたちまち逃げるのである。

英語訳
According to the Kabuki Sankai Zue (Kabuki Three-Story Illustrated Guide):
The human-faced catfish appears in theaters when the yang energy first emerges during ichiyō raifuku (the return of positive energy). It allies with the kugeaku (court noble villains) and commits various evil deeds. For the jitsugotoshi (virtuous character actors), it is extremely toxic.
If one is affected by this fish's poison, one should apply Ichikawa Danjūrō moxa thoroughly. It will immediately neutralize the poison.
Also, when this fish's bone gets stuck, one should chant "shibaraku" three times while stroking the throat. It will come out miraculously.
Indeed, this is an outrageous poisonous fish.
While the earthquake catfish says "banzairaku-raku" (long live joy), this catfish immediately flees when one says "shibaraku."
