宇治甚助殿、片山栄蔵殿、石兵衛、仁三郎、勝之助、伊勢次郎、理八の合計七人が出帆を命じられ、残りの弥右衛門、弥吉、文吉、栄吉、千代松、才次郎、私は同月二十八日にサフ（泗水府）から出帆を命じられました。その前夜、サフの奉行も御前において酒を下され、品々のもてなしがあった上で、菓子類を種々沢山いただき、ありがたく頂戴いたしました。最初に甚助殿ら七人が出帆した際も、一緒に私どもも馳走になりましたが、改めてこのような取り扱いがあり、出帆の際も通訳から申し伝えられた様子で、大きな蜜柑一荷を私どもへ下されました。サフの船は凡そ四千石積みほどの船で、赤や黒などで色々と彩色されています。船中には商人六十人ほど、船方六十人ほど、私どもを合わせて都合百三、四十人ほどが乗り組んでいます。すべて中国近くの海は泥水のようです。

出帆後、次第に色の白い海になってきたところ、船頭らが「もはや朝鮮に近づいた」と申し聞かせ、「今四、五日のうちには日本へ着くであろう」と申していました。日本に近いと思われ海の色が青くなったので、皆喜んでいたところ、俄かに風向きが変わり、船方が色々と働いていましたが、船は次第に吹き戻され、白い海を越えて泥の海のところへ戻ってしまいました。私どももそれぞれ色々と働きましたが、全体的に船が大きすぎて日本船とは勝手が違い、どうなることかとあきれていました。そのうち向こうから船一艘がやって来たので、中国人が言葉をかけたところ、何か答えて船は行き過ぎました。船方の者などは何度も日本へ渡海しており日本語をよく覚えているので、今の船方が申し合わせた様子を船方の者に尋ねたところ、「ホク

Seven people - Lord Uji Jinsuke, Lord Katayama Eizō, Ishihei, Jinzaburō, Katsanosuke, Ise Jirō, and Rihachi - were ordered to depart by ship, while the remaining members - Yaemon, Yakichi, Bunkichi, Eikichi, Chiyomatsu, Saijirō, and myself - were ordered to depart from Siaf (Quanzhou Prefecture) on the 28th of the same month. The evening before departure, the magistrate of Siaf also granted us sake in his presence, and after various hospitalities, we were given many kinds of sweets in abundance, which we gratefully received. When Lord Jinsuke and the other seven first departed, we were also treated together with them, but this time we received such treatment anew. At departure, as conveyed through the interpreter, we were given one load of large oranges. The ship from Siaf was approximately a 4,000-koku capacity vessel, painted in various colors with red and black. Aboard the ship were about sixty merchants, about sixty crew members, and including ourselves, a total of about 130 to 140 people. The seas near China are all like muddy water.

After departure, the sea gradually became whiter in color. The ship's captain and others told us "We are now approaching Korea" and said "We should reach Japan within four or five days." Thinking we were near Japan, the sea color turned blue, and everyone was rejoicing. However, the wind suddenly changed direction, and though the crew worked hard in various ways, the ship was gradually blown back, crossing the white sea and returning to the muddy sea area. We also worked hard in various ways, but the ship was too large overall and handled differently from Japanese ships, so we were bewildered about what would become of us. Meanwhile, a ship came from the opposite direction, and when the Chinese called out to it, it responded with something and passed by. Since the crew members had crossed to Japan many times and had learned Japanese well, when we asked a crew member about what the ship's people had just discussed, [he said] "Hoku..."
