一明和三四年之頃ゟ於江戸表霊岸島定詰之侍遠慮閉門被仰付節江戸表之儀ニ候へハ同御屋
敷内へ親類縁者無之者も多く依之相番之内或ハ心易キ者通路相願候最前ハ壱人ニ候へ共
壱人ニ而ハ当番御使者等之儀指支候ニ付近年両人ニ願候而被仰付候儀有之於江戸御咎之部可見合
一江戸表ニ而御咎之者留守相慎居候内通路之儀江戸ニ而御咎之留守之部出之
一文政二卯正月嶋田久馬遠慮之節通路笹治兵庫名代差越旨申聞候ニ付御用番大谷丹下方
へ相伺候処名代差越候儀不宜旨被申聞候ニ付其段兵庫へ申達候
但寄合之方ニ而ハ名代与申事有之由ニ候得共此度右之通相改候事

処右等之儀ハ例も無之親類申談不相済趣ニ而追而別紙之通月番御目付大崎七太夫へ御家老
中ゟ被申渡親類共へ申達候様被申聞候ニ付七太夫ゟ親類市村久太郎へ別紙之通相達候処尚又早速
申談候上小栗助七通路相願候事 仍之親類も遠慮伺差出候由

一、通路人が高知席であれば、自分が罷り越す節も使いを遣わす節も、口上／使い（異筆）をもって御目付へ断りがある筈
一、宝暦十年八月十六日、御城代笹治多門遠慮の節、通路高知荻野孫右衛門が相勤めた節、右の通りの事

一、明和六年五月十一日、御書院番組御右筆片山瀬左衛門、侍身分を削られ御徒へ御下げ押込を仰せ付けられた節、実兄片山弥五右衛門が相願って通路した事
一、三寺与右衛門月番十一月二十日、小算塚韮塚六助御咎めの節、大御番組韮塚利右衛門通路
一、明和三、四年の頃より江戸表霊岸島定詰めの侍が遠慮閉門を仰せ付けられる節、江戸表の儀であるから同御屋敷内へ親類縁者のない者も多く、これにより相番の内或いは心易い者が通路を相願う。最前は一人であったが、一人では当番御使者等の儀に差し支えるにつき、近年両人に願って仰せ付けられる儀がある。江戸御咎めの部を見合わせること
一、江戸表にて御咎めの者が留守で相慎んでいる内の通路の儀は、江戸にて御咎めの留守の部に出ている
一、文政二年正月、嶋田久馬遠慮の節、通路笹治兵庫が名代を差し越す旨申し聞いたにつき、御用番大谷丹下方へ相伺ったところ、名代を差し越す儀はよろしくない旨を申し聞かれたにつき、その段を兵庫へ申し達した
但し寄合の方では名代と申す事があるようだが、この度右の通り相改めた事
附 高知席では名代を差し越す事、もっとも自分とも罷り越す事
一、文政十二年四月、相沢庄左衛門閉門を仰せ付けられたところ、右通路の親類がいずれも役付等のある面々につき、かれこれ申し立てがあり通路がない趣につき、無役御留守番仲間の内にて見回るよう番頭より御家老中へ達した上、仲間より見回りに罷り越すようになったところ、右等の儀は例もなく親類申し談じが相済まない趣にて、追って別紙の通り月番御目付大崎七太夫へ御家老中より申し渡し、親類共へ申し達すよう申し聞かれたにつき、七太夫より親類市村久太郎へ別紙の通り相達したところ、なお又早速申し談じた上、小栗助七が通路を相願った事。よって親類も遠慮伺いを差し出したという

1. On May 11th, Meiwa 6th year, when Palace Guard scribe Katayama Sezaemon had his samurai status stripped and was demoted to foot soldier with confinement, his biological brother Katayama Yagoemon petitioned and served as visitor.
1. Monthly Duty Officer Mitera Yoemon on November 20th: When Kotsuzuka Nirazuka Rokusuke was under punishment, Ōban guard Nirazuka Riemon served as visitor.
1. From around Meiwa 3rd-4th years, when retainers permanently stationed at Reiganjima in Edo were ordered discretionary confinement or house arrest, since this was Edo business, many had no relatives or connections within the same residence compound. Therefore, duty partners or close acquaintances petitioned for visitation. Initially this was one person, but since one person caused difficulties with duty messengers and such, in recent years two people have been petitioned for and granted. Refer to the Edo punishment section.
1. Regarding visitation while those punished in Edo remain in custody at their residence, this appears in the section on Edo punishment custody.
1. In January, Bunsei 2nd year, when Shimada Kyūma was under discretionary confinement, visitor Sasaji Hyōgo reported sending a representative. When this was inquired to Duty Officer Ōtani Tange, he was told that sending representatives was inappropriate, so this was communicated to Hyōgo.
However, among council members, the practice of representatives apparently exists, but this time it was changed as above.
Addendum: For high-ranking retainers, sending representatives is proper, and going personally is also proper.
1. In April, Bunsei 12th year, when Aizawa Shōzaemon was ordered house confinement, since his relatives for visitation were all office holders and various objections were raised with no visitation arranged, the guard commander reported to the senior councilors that inspection should be conducted by non-office-holding residence guard colleagues, and colleagues began making inspection visits. However, since such matters were unprecedented and relatives could not reach agreement, subsequently as per the attached document, Senior Councilors instructed Monthly Duty Inspector Ōsaki Shichitayū to communicate to the relatives. Shichitayū communicated to relative Ichimura Kyūtarō as per the attached document, whereupon after immediate consultation, Oguri Sukeshichi petitioned for visitation. Consequently, relatives also submitted an inquiry regarding discretionary confinement.

Regarding Aizawa Shōzaemon being ordered house confinement, while visitation should have been promptly petitioned, the delay occurred because relatives failed to adequately consult among themselves, which is most inappropriate. Originally, when misconduct occurs and visitation during punishment is granted as petitioned through special compassion based on family bonds, there may be those in positions such as officials, pages, attendants, and other daily intensive duties who unavoidably find it difficult to petition. To generally assume that serving in office makes petitioning difficult may be customary, but this is a grave misunderstanding. Primarily, failing to understand the principle of compassion is the height of disrespect. However, this matter will not be brought to official attention.
