現代語訳
駒木山の樹木がどれほどあるか数えてみるべしとなめくじりの仰せに、みんなで数えたところ、混雑してさっぱり分からなかった。このとき蛇は仲間の蛇どもをおびただしく集め、何匹いるか数を極め、一匹ずつ木に巻きつかせて、残った蛇を数えることで木の数を知ったその知恵のほど、実におもしろい。
それより蛇は普請奉行を言いつかり、三日のうちに城の普請を出来上がらせるつもりで請け負い、大工の棟梁や日雇い、手伝いをみんな呼び寄せ、割り当て普請の仕方を言い渡し、指図して三日のうちに是非とも上手に完成するようにと言い渡した。
「ずいぶん精を出せ。その代わりに褒美はしっかりと取らせてやる。生漆と下地がよい。必ず油を売ったり蛇を遣ったりすることはならぬぞ」

When the slug monster ordered that they should count how many trees there were on Mount Komaki, everyone tried to count but became confused and couldn't figure it out at all. At this time, the snake gathered an enormous number of fellow serpents, determined their exact count, had them wrap around the trees one by one, then counted the remaining snakes to determine the number of trees - this display of cleverness was truly remarkable.
From then on, the snake was appointed as construction magistrate and undertook to complete the castle construction within three days. He called together all the master carpenters, day laborers, and helpers, assigned them their duties, instructed them on how to proceed with the construction work, and ordered them to complete it skillfully within three days without fail.
