現代語訳
城の普請は日数三日のうちにみんなできあがるつもりの請け負いで、一軒ずつを割り当て、大工人足その他それぞれに指図して油断なく働かせ、ついに城の普請を上手に完成させた。
「早くこの普請を片付けて、猫又屋敷の三毛のところへ行こうじゃないか」
「ええ、気が揉める。いっそのこと、しれっとして押し通そう」
「頭、弁当を早く頼みます」
「だいぶん榫（ほぞ）が外れてきた」
夜は狐が火を灯し、あるいは人魂などの光で材木を引き入れる。
「ああ、そこだそこだ、おう、高々」
「向こうに何か猛火が見える。もしかして美しい幽霊か。ちらちらと白く見えるぞ」
「今の削りでおそろしく勢いがよくなった。そこだそこだ、そうだぞ」
英語訳
The castle construction was contracted to be completed within three days. Work was assigned building by building, with carpenters, laborers, and others each given their instructions and made to work without rest, until finally the castle construction was skillfully completed.
"Let's quickly finish this construction work and go to Nekomata mansion where the calico cat is."
"Yes, I'm getting anxious. We might as well just brazen it out and push through."

At night, foxes light fires, or they bring in timber by the light of will-o'-the-wisps and such supernatural flames.
"Ah, there, right there! Heave ho, up high!"
"I can see some kind of fierce fire over there. Perhaps it's a beautiful ghost? I can see something flickering white."
