現代語訳
佐屋川を渡船で渡る時、猫又が秘蔵の割笄を船中に置いて失くしてしまったので、猫又は大いに惜しみ、普段心安い者どもにこのことを話し、「もしも誰か持っているなら、早速に知らせてください」と頼んだ。その中でも狸は少し胸気者（嫉妬深い性格）で、「それこそ深山の蛇が盗み取ったに違いない」と言ったので、猫又は本当のことと心得て大いに怒り、「その通りだ。己れ深山者の蛇め、そのままにしておけるか」と、このことを大将なめくじへも詳しく申し上げ、急いで蛇女を捕らえて詮議しようと息巻いている。
「いっそのこと、腐れ蛇にたらふくやらかして、猫じゃ猫じゃと言って驚かそう」
「さてさて、蛇女は図太い奴だ。とかく、のらくらして暮らすものには油断がならない」
「私がしっかりと睨んでおいたことがあるから、間違いはないさ」
「蛇という奴は、いったい穴這い回ることが好きだから、あの笄を盗って皿屋敷のお菊のところへでも行くつもりさ。それにしても生意気な奴めだ」
英語訳
When crossing the Saya River by ferry boat, Nekomata (the cat-demon) left her treasured split hairpin on the boat and lost it. Nekomata greatly regretted this loss and spoke of it to those with whom she was on familiar terms, asking, "If anyone happens to have it, please let me know immediately." Among them, the tanuki (raccoon dog) was somewhat of a jealous type and said, "It must have been that snake from the deep mountains who stole it." Nekomata took this as the truth and became greatly enraged, saying, "That's right! That cursed mountain snake! How can I let this pass?" She reported this matter in detail to General Namekuji (slug) and was working herself up to quickly capture the snake woman and interrogate her.
"We might as well give that rotten snake a good thrashing and surprise her by crying 'Cat! Cat!'"
"Well, well, that snake woman is a brazen one. You can never let your guard down around those who live by being evasive and slippery."
