現代語訳
佐谷川合戦で、敵方は大いに打ち勝って勢いに乗って攻め戦った。なめくじの方には蛇が策略を巡らし、たちまち敵方を追い崩し、ついにその城を乗っ取り、功名を現した。これより下級武士から立身出世して軍師となった。まことに蛇は一寸ほどの小さな時でもその気概を現し、龍は身を潜めて虫や魚のようであっても、時を得ては雲雨を起こし、天に昇る兆しがあることは恐るべきことである。
「やあ、敵に後ろを見せるとは卑怯者め、帰せ帰せ！」
「いや嘘だ。帰すな。やっぱり逃げてくれ。そうだそうだ」
「いい加減に追いかけたら、こちらも休んで煙草にしよう」
