現代語訳
岡崎の河童は、かの小蛇を連れ帰って使っていたが、まことに「龍は三寸にしてその気をなす」という譬えの通り、自然と大勇の器量を備えており、その上知恵にも優れて、化け物仲間も呆れるほどであった。河童は末頼もしく思って、その知恵を試してみようと戯れに小蛇に向かい、「お前が我が尻の玉を抜くならば、褒美は望み次第である」と言う。蛇は恐縮して、「今夜お前様の尻の玉を抜きましょう」と請け合った。
河童はその夜は眠ることもせず、用心していた。蛇はわざと河童を眠らせないように、寝間の外では先に物音を立てて、今や忍び入る様子を見せていたので、河童は少しも油断せずに、とうとうその夜を明かした。明け方になって、もうよいだろうと心を緩め、うとうととまどろんだところ、蛇はここぞとばかりに忍び込み、ついに河童の尻の玉をひっこ抜いてしまった。

「あいつめ、のらりくらりと蛇を使うが、油断がならぬ。しかし俺の尻の玉を抜こうとは、それこそみみずの木登り、及ばぬことだ。なんとして」
英語訳
The Okazaki kappa took the small snake home and employed him. Truly, as the saying goes "a dragon shows its spirit even at three inches long," the snake naturally possessed the qualities of great courage, and moreover was superior in wisdom to such a degree that even his monster companions were amazed. The kappa, thinking him very promising, decided to test his wisdom and said playfully to the small snake, "If you can extract the jewel from my rear, I'll give you whatever reward you desire." The snake humbly accepted, saying "Tonight I shall extract the jewel from your rear."
That night the kappa could not sleep and remained vigilant. The snake deliberately prevented the kappa from sleeping by making noises outside his sleeping quarters first, then acting as if he were about to sneak in. Because of this, the kappa maintained his guard without the slightest carelessness and thus passed the entire night. When dawn came and he thought "it should be fine now," he relaxed his guard and dozed off drowsily. At that moment, the snake seized his chance, crept in, and finally extracted the jewel from the kappa's rear.
