現代語訳
かの蛇は「しめしめ」と、狐の木の葉小判六両を取って逃げた。ところが木の葉なので何の価値もなかった。しかし、また良い住処もあるだろうかと、都の方へ向かって出て行った。
途中で茶店に休んでいたところ、ここに往来の山伏という蛇も休んでいた。この蛇がこちらの蛇をつくづく見て、「さても不思議なことがある。貴殿には青龍の兆しがある。今こそ卑しい小蛇であるけれども、ついには大蛇となって雲に跨り、天を飛行し、神通力自在の身となるであろう」と申した。
まことに、この山伏の一言は違いなく、蛇の道は蛇がよく知るということである。
「なんだ、あの蛇女らは適当に行けばよい。あの女がさっきから、いやらしい目つきをして俺の顔をじろじろと見てけつかる」
「さてさて『帰命頂礼』やときやがる」
「それは嬉しいと言わせておいて笑ってやろう」
英語訳
That snake thought "excellent!" and took the fox's six ryō in leaf-coins and fled. However, since they were only leaves, they were worthless. Nevertheless, thinking there might be other good dwelling places, he set out toward the capital.
Resting at a tea shop along the way, he encountered another snake who was a traveling yamabushi (mountain ascetic). This snake looked intently at our snake and said, "How strange indeed! You bear the signs of the Azure Dragon. Though you are now but a lowly small snake, you will eventually become a great serpent, straddle the clouds, soar through the heavens, and become a being of supernatural powers."
Truly, this yamabushi's words were accurate, for snakes know the way of snakes well.
"What's with those snake women - they can just get by however they like. That woman has been giving me disgusting looks and staring at my face intently, damn her!"
"Well, well, acting all 'Namo Buddha' and such, damn her!"
"Let her say that's wonderful - I'll just laugh at her."
