現代語訳
神輿は箱根の先へ移って、だんだんと幸せよく大金持ちとなったので、その土地に久しく住む化け物たちからも大いに重用されて、みな神輿の元へ従いてきて「親方、親方」と敬うようになった。神輿も流石は老巧で、化け物仲間に心安く、いろいろと化け方を教えて物事を勝ち場にするには、「とかく、しつこくは脅さぬがよい。大島の広袖を着ている人と、頭に力紙のある人には構わぬがよし。とかく弱い奴でも、正気者には構わず、横たわしな奴は思いっきり脅してやるがいい」と、いろいろと仲間へ言い聞かせ教えたので、今は仲間の化け物までも気を利かして、丑三つ時には皆いい按配に足を洗って引っ込んだ。
まことに五風十雨よりも化け物までもその時を違えず、とざず、この世こそ久しけれ。
「与一兵衛というような親父を脅して、財布を引ったくって、これはァ久しぶりの五十両、ありがてえ」と中を見れば、飯五合ばかりと焼き飯が入れてあった。忌々しい。

Mikoshi moved beyond Hakone and gradually became very prosperous, accumulating great wealth. The demons who had long dwelt in that land came to rely heavily on him, and they all came to serve under Mikoshi, respectfully calling him "boss, boss." Mikoshi, being truly experienced and skillful, became intimate with his demon companions and taught them various methods of haunting. He instructed them on how to gain the advantage: "In any case, it's better not to be too persistent in frightening people. Don't bother with people wearing Oshima broad sleeves or those with power papers on their heads. Generally, don't mess with sane people even if they seem weak, but those who are unruly should be thoroughly frightened." He taught and instructed his companions in various ways, so now even his fellow demons became considerate, and during the Hour of the Ox (around 2-3 AM), they all properly washed their feet and retired.
Truly, even more reliable than the natural cycle of five days of wind and ten days of rain, even the demons never missed their proper timing. May this world last forever.
